They have a motto "the way life ought to be" or something close to that. It generally is a very easy going rural state. I would estimate there are guns in about 75% of the homes. When I moved back to Texas in 05 I was seeing an awful lot of Massachusetts/Connecticut/Canadian money buying up large portions of the state and a lot of younger "Maniacs" going south in search of greener pastures. The economy away from the coastal areas was deteriorating rapidly. I had to move back because I could no longer take the -20 to -40 actual January temps and 36 -40 inch winter snow storms. The short summers were beautiful with the exception for the black flies and mosquitoes. Southern Maine was not as extreme weather wise, but the Massachusetts influence was very noticeable.
