You can keep your AL residence as your home of record and your legal state odf residence. All you have to do is get xfer to a TX DL or get a TX ID and you are considered a resident. I have a TX DL (which could help you out in the future) and am still a legal resident of PA ( I still pay taxes there). But TX also considers me a resident and I have a resident CHL.
