I was freezing my butt off at Astro on Monday. A buddy in Bertram suggested it when I complained about no centerfire rifle FMJ allowed on most/all public outdoor ranges in the Austin area.

It turns out Astro also forbids FMJ centerfire rifle ammo. Doh.

Their place is a work in progress. "Continually improving" from what my friend said. Friendly staff, 3-sided berms, tho they use scrap wood behind the targets, between the back of the target stand and the dirt berm. I have never seen that before. Not too sure it's the safest thing? A lot of pistol bullets laying around in/on the scrap wood. Easy richochet.

They'll let you hang your own paper targets. Target stands are at fixed distances.

I'd prefer to drive down to Cedar Ridge in Bulverde if I plan on spending a whole day shooting. Brass-cased HP and SP aren't too cheap in 7.62x51 and 5.56...

FMJ is just fine. Steel jacketed is the no no at Astro.

I passed this place on my way to my hunting trip up near Copperas Cove this past Sunday.

All I can find is the location, no word on any hours, rules, fees, or anything else.

Anyone know where I can find specific information about this range?

Hours are 9 to 5:30, 7 days a week. Closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.
12 dollars a head, 10 between 9 and 10:30 in the morning, 10 for leo or active and retired military. 10 to 17 year olds are 6 bucks.
2 pistol ranges at 7 and 15 feet, 2 rifle ranges with 25, 50, and 100 yards targets. And a trap range.
Also a special open range for leo and military to use. Owner gives Texas and Utah concealed classes.
Ear muffs, glasses, and front billed cap required. Standard range rules. No rapid fire, double taps are cool as long as they are kept on target.
Mondays and Tuesdays are slow, so if you want a quiet and relaxed day of shooting, these are the days.

I may take you up on that when I go to pick up my deer meat this weekend, most likely on Sunday.

What's the trap range like? Since I have a membership at Lone Star, I go there for most everything but they do not yet have any kind of skeet/trap range. From what I understand, the Eagle Peak range leaves much to be desired for clay shooting.

Also, what's the policy on using shotguns at the handgun range?

Sunday is my one day off, but if you let me know when you are coming by I'll meet you there. It's only 5 minutes away from home, so its no big deal.
We have one auto thrower on the trap range, holds about 25 clays, and gets real fun with the cross winds.
And sorry, no shotguns or even shotshells on the pistol ranges. Tears up the target holders. We can set you up on a side range and you can shoot in a berm to pattern your shot.
Just give me a holler.
