Eagle Peak and Garland Gun Range

Eagle Peak and the Garland Gun range are owned by the same guy.

I like both ranges, and have used both ranges for the past year or so.

I just cant stand that they don't accept credit/debit cards.

I don't like that no FMJ rifle ammo is allowed, nor that their overhangs are down too low to shoot an AR-15 with 30-round mag. Not the best place to take your AR or AK for good cheap fun. Pistol range is OK. Rifle range is really limited to hunting and target rifles - or ARs with 20-round mags or shorter.

I thought there was some law about not being able to shoot FMJ from a Rifle unless you have 1000 Yards space or something

Don't know for certain the reason for no FMJ rule, but I've heard that both that and the low ceilings are "safety precautions" mandated by their insurance company. No FMJ to reduce richochets and low ceilings to lessen over shooting the berm.

#1 reason is to increase ammo sales by the range operator.

Eagle Peak is a pretty range...the set up is not that bad for an outdoor range. With that said, I don't go out there much anymore.

I absolutely get the "safety" thing...however, there are a few range/safety folks at Eagle Peak that are little over the top. I watched a few folks get "yelled" at...one of them a young kid (about 10 or 12 years old).

There are certainly different ways or approaches you can use to ensure safety compliance...I don't think it warrant s a "verbal" beating for actions that were very low risk

I know Austin Rifle Club allows it so it's probably not against the law, unless it's a county law. I think it's just an insurance issue.

Eagle Peak also prohibits prone shooting, holster drawing and rapid fire.

The wife and I love the place. We mostly shoot pistol and shotgun though. Yea they said the FMJ was a requirement due to distance.
Its clean, well maintained, and we don't get a hassle.
If you want anal go to places like American shooting centers in Houston.

I also shoot there, I have been even before it was Eagle Peak. It has come along way, On busy days they are very strict and even though I dont agree with how they do kinda scold people and yell and such not a bad place overall. If you go on a day when its not busy it is a lot nicer to shoot, they will watch still but more making sure you are not doing any thing thats really off.
One big perk is the $10 for all day of shooting.

Not to highjack the thread, but where in the world can I shoot FMJ from an AR15 in the Dallas/Plano/Frisco area? I have saved the funds for an AR but am now holding off on the purchase until I find some place I can shoot the less expensive FMJ? I typically shoot my handguns in Garland and am relatively happy with it.

Its cheaper to buy and I think If I am not mistaken it is what a lot of surplus ammo is

I shoot my AR-15 at the Garland range regularly with no problem. I love that range because it is clean, safe, priced reasonably and the people who run it are very nice. I have never had a problem there.

FMJ issue is richochet or so I was told at the Elm Fork range
the assumption that soft point bullets wont bounce intact
In the summer the dirt can get hard - I could see that its a rule to keep bullets inside the range
