It is indeed a joke. It is like work... I work with a bunch of young PhDs and I think it is ironic that when you are young and your brain works at peak efficiency, you have no knowledge or experience for it to work on. Once you are old enough to have learned up from down, your (my) brain is so worn out that it takes forever to percolate a thought through.

Bayou Rifles is a good club. Nothing is perfect, and a couple of the rules I mentioned are sort of silly in a way, but it is a safe place - proud of "no firearms-related injuries since inception in 1936" - we've had bee stings, twisted ankles, splinters, and so forth, but as far as anyone recalls, nobody has been shot. And the Highpower crowd is very accepting. Years ago, I went to "one match" to qualify for my Garand from CMP. Instead of "go away and don't come back until you learn to shoot that rifle" I was told how to stand, where to put my elbow to support my arm and the forend, and to keep my head as upright as possible - informal coaching instead of criticism. Hooked.

I used to go to public indoor ranges (in the Chicago area, in the early 1970s) and could not imagine it these days.

So as you say, family and work are top priorities, but take time to get to the range and make some holes in paper.

Andrew
