Long range rifle shooting ranges in DFW area?

...one thing we found out at Alpine Range after 5 of us came in and paid our entry is that the 1000 rds. FMJ .223 wasn't allowed there...no FMJ rifle ammo on the range...we bought all the soft points that we could afford amongst us and shot all 80 of them...at 100 yards I couldn't even see my hits...my 17, 22, and 24-year olds could...maybe it's time I either get a scope or learn to call 'em in closer...

Really? They could see a .223 hole at 100 yards? I hope you're talking about with a scope.

I couldn't see my 30-06 shots at 50 yards without my binoculars and thanks to Dr. Boothe I have about 20/15 in both eyes. I don't know if I could see them at 100 yards yet or not, but I am thinking about getting a spotting scope. I could still see my .22 holes at 50 yards with my binoculars, but am fairly certain I couldn't see them at 100 yards with the binoculars I have. If I do get out to McKinney and can even hit the target at 100 yards or further, if someone doesn't come with me that has a spotting scope, I'm surely going to need one.

...so maybe they all lied to me to make me feel better...who knows??? I do know I couldn't see 'em...but when we took the target down, there WERE some...we didn't have any scopes or glasses...but we had a Cherokee with us...he said he could see 'em too...he's 70 and routinely sees things I don't...had a Cherokee uncle that was the same way...

I actually hate shooting alone and want to check this place out. I would love to bring out my small WWII collection and shoot them. I keep boasting of my old range and its 700 yard steel (and my supposed skill) and am desperate for something comparable.

You mean MY old range. That was my home range before I moved to Texas. The best part was being able to shoot long range just 20 minutes from my house. Plus, there was the Desert Marksmen 1,000 yard range off of the Angeles Forest Highway. Heck of a thing when you have to choose between a 700 yard range 20 minutes away, or a 1,000 yard range 40 minutes away. I was genuinely surprised that ranges like that weren't more common when I moved to Texas.

You and me both...I am still shocked and dismayed that the best range that I've ever been too was in Kalifornia. You've been there so you can vouch...Angeles Crest rocks. I would always go on Thursday morning for the $4 special!!! The SWAT team NEVER showed up at 1pm...it was too good to be true.

I took a tactical pistol class from Bruce Krell there. He is on the board of directors and man did I have an awesome (but exhausting and brutal) time in that class.

Heart of Tx. Silueta Assn. is southwest of Corsicana,near Coolidge Tx. This is an NRA affiliated silhouette range with 500 meter range. We have a lot of members that live in the DFW area.Our club president lives in Richardson.This range has concrete firing line and covered.Benchs to shoot from. $100 a year and you must be an NRA member. They give you the gate combination,and you can shoot anytime there is not a match going on. Great place to shoot.

This one is about 60 miles from my house, but I am eager to try it out. Everybody who has been there seems to really like it. The price is right, and the owner's attitude is right on. Others can tell you more. Beiruty, among others, had a really good experience there. Top Gun requires you to ding a 8" steel plate at 200 yards before allowing out to 300 yards, and you have to do it again at 300 yards to move out to 400 yards, etc. etc.



Why are you required to hit a target at "x" distance before going to "2x" distance? I know safety first, and you should be able to hit what you're aiming at but what if I want to shoot a box of ammo at the 500 yarder right off the bat? Shouldn't it be up to me? Just curious, I can shoot up to 300 yards at my house.

IDK, but I am itching to get out there. Maybe they don't have that much space on the longer ranges. Maybe they give you some kind of qualification card that says what distance you've already dinged so you don't have to go through all of them each time.

Once qualified at certain range, I guess you can shoot up to that range, I hit up to 400 yrd and had trouble at 500 yrd because my DOA was not accurate with the wrong bullet (weight and shape, muzzle velocity)

No, it should be up to the man who owns the range and pays the insurance.

I assumed and said safety first, not knowing how these ranges are set up. I haven't been on a shooting range since the Marine Corps about 25 years ago. I wondered if it was a local rule or some obscure range law. Good common sense I guess, on a public range.
