It's a pretty nasty place. If you have another choice I'd explore it first. Where exactly in Houston are you?

I think you would have a better experience at Sportsman's Outlet in Humble.

On FM1960 bypass, east of 59.

Its been a couple of years since I've been there. I stopped in and shot with an IDPA group there a couple of times. Fun group-- not too inviting of a place. I left with the taste of gunpowder. One evening it was raining and water was all over the range floor, dripping from the ceiling.

For as long as I can remember, it has been a dump. For a long time, it was a friendly dump but, still a dump. Don't know if Luis Febles still owns it though. All that said, a good friend has often said that three of four times he has pointed a gun at someone were incidents in the 59 Gun Range parking lot. I was there for at least one case of an attempted vehicle burglary and had some very exciting times at our old hangout (Luther's BBQ aka Papas BBQ) down the road at E. Mt. Houston. If that's a convenience location for you, you might also consider Sportsman's Outlet up the road in Humble on 1960.
When you take the time out of your day to beat someone, it has a much longer lasting effect on their demeanor than simply shooting or tazing them.

I haven't been there in years, but don't remember it being all that back then. If you're in North Houston you can also check out the Carter's Country out there (if you don't mind an outdoor range).

I live very close to there and although it's not the cleanest establishment the people running it are very friendly and pleasant to deal with.
It's so close to my home it's just to convenient to pass up.
Except for Shiloh gun range where I went to qualify for my yet to be delivered CHL plastic the 59 range was the only indoor range I had ever visited.
That area of town has been in the dumps for close to two decades so if you go there to shoot dont expect a white glove establishment.

Unless they have rebuild recently (I hope they have) Sportsman's outlet burned to the gound about 3 years ago, last time I drove by it wasn't open. Nothing wrong with 59 Shooting Range, as long as you keep a full mag for the walk back to your car :smilelol5: . Carters on Treaschwig has very nice facilities, a full shop, and even clays. Top Gun near the Galleria is another option near 59.

The place is a dump? Tell me about it. Last time I went the wine was barely chilled and the lobster tasted kind of fishy. On top of all that my car smelled funny when the valet brought it up (I think he went joy riding if you know what I mean)
But seriously, the family that runs the place is one of the nicest, warmest, and friendly bunch out of any gun related business I've ever encountered - not to mention that they really know their stuff and will be glad to answer any question or share shooting tips with you without making you feel like your stupid.
They are totally proffesional in how they run the range, they have a great variety of guns available for rental, and the prices are pretty good too.
Yes, one time the air conditioning was out but I had already told my chauffer he could take an hour off so I shot anyway. Oh, the horror! I actually broke a sweat. My eyes were stinging and it was hard to get a breath. I realized then that, gasp, I was shooting under real-world conditions! And even though they refused to have someone stand next to me and wipe my brow and fan me with a giant palm leaf (you know, like at home) I actually still shot well and enjoyed myself.
And don't worry about the parking lot. The nice pregnant lady that was working there was kind enough to hold my hand and escort me to my limo.
On the downside, a friend of mine claims that the last time he went there someone got on the PA system and announced, "All non-bluecollar workers must leave the building!"
P.S. You know your not a redneck if you mistake the ventilation system for leaks in the ceiling!

Glad to hear you enjoyed the range. Might not be as fancy as some, but it sure beats shooting in your living room.
Last time I was there I thought I saw a rat - but the guy said, "them ain't rats, thems reactive targets!"

You are a little behind the times. Sportsman's finally reopened a few months ago and is once again one of the best indoor facilities in town. There is an IDPA club shooting there on Tuesday nights a 6pm. Gregg Garrett of Comp-Tac and Gordon Carrell of Smith & Wesson are regular attendees. The club is growing and highly recommended. Sportsman's presence as a range has surely been missed and it's only a few minutes north of 59 Gun Range. You also won't need to worry quite as much about getting target practice in the parking lot or the surrounding restaurants.

Top Gun had a range fire last July that consumed all of range A, most of range B, and destroyed all electrical wiring tha fed range C. For all practical purposes, they haven't had a range for eight months. Top Gun is supposed to complete repairs this month but they are effectively on the opposite end of town from 59 Gun Range or Sportsman's. They've also ended the program I ran for them on Tuesdays and basically kicked our Thursday night defensive shooting club to the curb in favor of a new trainer by the name of John Boyert. John is apparently a former Army Ranger who has been deployed during the war on terror. If nothing else, that should mean a better program than I could run as a volunteer. However; one snide comment he made to one of our former club members about things being "safe this time around" I kinda took as an insult.

With one exception, the majority of negligent discharges that have resulted in property damage at Top Gun were the direct actions of their own employees, not my shooters. The members of our club were never accused of drawing guns on customers or reacting inappropriately after a customer commited suicide on their range. It was also our club that tried to put a stop to the fire and checked for trapped shooters in the range while their staff stood by cluelessly asking if they should call 911. Our shooters lost over a dozen guns and other gear in that fire...Top Gun never offered so much as an appology and I believe they blame us for the fire that wouldn't have happened were it not for the PE foam they put back on their walls AFTER the fire at Sportsman's...Yeah, I'm a little sore about Top Gun right now. Won't be spending any money there or recommending it to anyone. They succeed despite themselves.
