Any ranges near Katy?

I'm looking for a range close to Katy (Westpark tollway and Hwy 99). The closest one I am familiar with is Memorial Shooting Center, which is a bit of a drive.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried American Shooting Center in George BushPark, on Westheimer Parkway? That is the closest one to Katy.

I have. That is where I do my rifle shooting. I would not shoot handguns there due to the restriction on "rapid fire". I was hoping for another choice that was closer than Beltway 8.

Thanks for the confirmation. I just wish I had the money and time to set up a good range in the area west of Hwy 99. Alot of open land and "civilization" keeps moving out that way, increasing the demand.

Thanks.

I just may have to chec k that out. Is it best to just contact the IDPA and sign up for one of the matches?

Not to mention, I feel like I'm taking my life into my own hands (so to speak) when I go to their pistol range. There are a LOT of morons that have never shot a pistol before, and don't seek any instruction, then go to shoot there. I've been muzzle flashed 3 times and there is no barrier between you and the guy next to you. When these people experience a jam or an issue, the first thing they seem to do is turn the gun to the side while trying to fix it. WATCH for these people if you go here. The range masters try and watch too, but they can't see everything.

You can show up for the IDPA match tomorrow night. They start shooting at 6:00. I went last week to get a feel for things. Planning on shooting this week.

The next couple weeks are out for me. I'll be working till 10 PM or so every day. I may try to check out the first Saturday match next month. Is that one pretty open?

Katynut,

I believe they are all open, so don't be shy! The Saturday match may have more people involved, but it should be open if you want to shoot. Head out next month and let us know how you do! :coolgleamA:

If you are interested in the Impactzone, you will have to have some known ability before he will let you become a member. Only Phil (the owner) can determine this. Comiing to a match is a good way to be introduced and him to observe.

We shoot IDPA every Wednesday night (6:00 PM), 1st Saturday of monthe (0830 AM) and best of all a Multigun Match the 2nd Saturday of each month (0830AM)
there are also IPSC, XD and many other matches.

Bob

I shot last night. Had a great time. I was wondering if there were any forum members there. Be nice to put faces with screen names. Any of y'all shoot last night?

The other range you can try that is nearby is Bayou Rifles. Its a private club and they have a large range down south of town but there is a smaller range over off Eldridge just north of I-10. Best plan is to join, then become a range officer and have your own key.

This range looks interesting. The Juliff range is a bit far for me, but the one on Eldrigde is pretty close by (closer to me than the impact zone). I may check out the next orientation. Dues are very reasonable. If I go once a month, it pays for the membership.

I have a 12 gauge with a pistol grip that I keep for home defense. Can I shoot that at the Juliff range? Also, how well controlled are the ranges? Are there designated range officers controlling firing, etc? Lastly, how crowded is the range on a typical weekend?

You can shoot your pistol-grip shotgun at Juliff, but are limited to slugs (or #7 birdshot). So far they have not changed the rules to allow buckshot.

Addicks has an RSO - part of the deal with the Army Corps of Engineers, from whom the club leases the land. Juliff is club owned; no RSO but the members are contentious enough that I've never felt anything but safe there.

I do not know about Addicks, but Juliff is not that crowded on weekends, and in the late afternoon I'm often the only one at the 25/50 yard range.

As a member I'm prejudiced in favor of the club, but I have to admit we have a couple of rules I consider less-than-reasonable. One is the slugs or birdshot (no buckshot) rule - the point is not to tear up the wood target frames. The other is the "no drawing from the holster" rule - out of concern that someone will shoot himself in the leg. This is just in the interest of "full disclosure" you can download and read the range rules from the club web site and decide for yourself if the rules are too restrictive.

And if you shoot Highpower rifle, come to the matches at Juliff on the second Sunday of the month. Or if you have a scoped rifle and rest, come shoot F-Class (prone) midrange the 3rd Sunday (usually) of the month.

Regards,
Andrew

Thanks Bobcat.

Bayou rifles sounds really interesting. I have never been to a private range before. Only American Shooting Center, and various indoor ranges around town. Other than the 3-4 times I have gone to American Shooting Center, the last time I was at an outdoor range was in the military. I will definitely check out the next orientation.

The main problem I have now is finding enough time. Between work and family, I have a very limited amount of free time for my two passions of guns and golf. Why is it that when you finally get to the point where you have some extra money to do fun things, you don't have any time to do them? I think its some kind of cosmic joke on us.
