Why no public ranges?

Not sure about the rest of the state, but with such a high population just in the Houston area, why aren't there any public shooting ranges? In almost every state I've lived in, Fish and Game or the state has usually had a few gun ranges.
Just curious why there don't seem to be any at least in this part of the State.

When you get out into the boonies where we live, though, it's the other way around and the smaller city PDs use the same private clubs that everybody else does.

I think most cities who could afford the funds for a range have too many houses nearby.

We had one in California was in a county park that was open for probably thirty years. When the land became so valuable housing developers starting building houses near the range. After a couple of years the new homeowners complained about the noise and their fear of stray bullets so they closed it down.

I've shot at the Texas City range a number of times and have no complaints, they run a good operation.


That being said, why do we need government ranges? Or rather, why is it the governments place to run shooting ranges? We seem to have plenty of privately owned ranges, both open to public and members only shooting clubs.

Texas City is a good range.

Why not public ranges? The government provides plenty of parks and lakes and other areas for the recreation of the public. They also have more land and money that we do.

For many years, back in the 1970s/1980s, the city Police range was the only one I knew about or used. They wouldn't hire "handicapped people" but after donating some guns, and buying Glocks for officers who didn't want Dept. issued revolvers ... I made some friends, and "happened to be" in their car when they went.

in/Near Harris/Fort Bend county is Barker Reservoir include the American Shooting Range, but I ABSOLUTELY refuse to go to USACE properties or give them money.
