North Texas rifle range that permits 5.56 FMJ?

#1

Post by MojoTexas »

I recently purchased my first AR-15, and I've been looking for a place where I can shoot 100 yards or more, and I'd really like to be able to use inexpensive and readily available 5.56x45mm NATO ammunition.

The two rifle ranges I've visited thus far are the Bullet Trap in Plano, and the Garland public shooting range. The Bullet Trap doesn't seem to care what kind of ammunition you're using as long as it's not .50 BMG...but their rifle range is dark and small and offers only about 25-30 yards of shooting. (And heaven help you if you shoot the target "stick"!) The Garland public range offers both 50-yard and 100-yard options for rifle, but they won't let you shoot FMJ ammunition due to ricochet concerns.

Am I missing any others?

Thanks,

Yes. Magnum Sports in Sanger has an informal range that goes out to about 250 yards. Call before you go - it's not always open:

Magnum Sports Center
4934 Duck Creek Road
Sanger, TX 76266

Are you sure about that link? That range appears to be in Houston. Do you mean http://www.topgunshootingclub.com/? If so, I've been thinking about checking them out...only downside is that they're not open every day.

Magnum looks good. I have several rifles that have never been fired, and I'd like to sight them in.

Elm Fork allows FMJ in the 50yd range, but not in the 100yd range.
