Purchasing armor plate for home range

#1

Post by TX0303 »

I would like to buy some armored steel plate to make my own gongs and poppers for my range at home. Is there a place in the Austin or Temple area that sells AR500 plate steel?

I don't know of anyone in Texas that carries AR500 steel, but you can buy it online with free shipping. http://www.wideners.com/itemview.cfm?dir=1020

last time i tried to buy some in CENTEX, I was told i could have the piece I needed in ten days, and it came with a free piece the size of a full sheet, minus the 10 x 30 hunk I wanted to buy :smilelol5: IOW, I could get it only in full sheets.

BTW, AR500 Steel in Houston. I was given the source, never bought from them.

Thanks for the info. I did find a seller in Waco but the smallest size is a 4x8 sheet. Guess I will buy precut targets from Wideners or ebay.

Yup that was my solution as well. I tried to talk the guy i was building targets for to just get the sheet.. I would take the extra as trade for work done..... :evil2:

Anybody want to post what price they quoted for a sheet of AR500 steel? What thickness?

Have fun making targets but be careful. I read online about making targets and alot of thought goes into deflection and angle of tartgets. Btw from what I understand the ar500 steel is rather stubborn to work with because of the hardness.

Metal2Go is in Waco. I did not call for a price as I know a whole sheet is out of my budget.
I think you want a minimum of 3/8". If mainly for HP rifle, go with 1/2".

I have a target made out of armor plate that I no longer use. PM me for details if interested.

when I checked , some 20 months ago, 13/8" 4x8 was like $1600. No idea what it costs today.

Steel pricing is worse than Bull/Bear gold pricing.

I've paid as much as $7.50/foot for DOM tubing and as little as $2.75/foot weeks apart.

For small quantities, check out Metal Super Markets. They have offices in the Dallas are and SE Ft. Worth on 287.
