Fri 3/23 Best of The West Report

Post by uthornsfan »

The Wife and I went out to Best of The West range on Friday afternoon for our date night :)

I built some target holders to make it more fun than just shooting paper and it turned out great. We shot some moving targets and played a couple hands of poker.

This is only her 6th time shooting(maybe) and is really starting to improve. She is shooting a Para Tac 4 in .45 ACP

By the way if you are in the North Austin area you really need to check out this place. It is in Liberty Hill and they are great people and the range is awesome. They have a 1000yd rifle range TONS of pistol bays skeet and trap and everythign else you could want. Its fantastic.

Thanks for the reminder and video
I need to get over there
15.6 mi, 18 mins from me and cheap enough.

I usually go to a private range between Burnet and Marble Falls that has chickenwire mounted to wood posts and we clothesline clip paper plates to the wire as targets.

Is there a way to use paper plates there? Just kinda got used to them as my favorite priced targets nowadays

I asked the great guys at the range shop and they didn't care what I brought as long as I cleaned up my mess!

I dunno if they want you loading up a car with tannerite and shooting it up but I am sure paper plates would be fine.

I am going to work on a motorized moving target platform next :)

Thanks for the range report!

I just moved to Round Rock from El Paso and thus need to find a good range here that is friendly to self defense styled shooting. Red's and Eagle peak seem like they'd be okay for plinking, but have rules/limitations that would not allow for appropriate training. I've been searching the net for reviews on Best of the West and all I've been hearing is good. I still need to make it by there to check it out, and hopefully become a member if I like it (which it sounds like I will!). Just out of curiosity, when you get a tactical bay, how long do they let you have it for? An Hour or so? I'm not used to a range that rents bays like that, so I'm just curious. I like the idea of having a nice big bay like that to myself. Do you know if they let you bring your own steel targets? Can you use shotguns/rifles in the tactical bays?

Sorry to bombard you with questions . It being further out of town doesn't bother me, if they offer what I'm looking for, and it sure looks like it does.

Thanks again for the post.

I have been to this range for some locally generated seminars and a couple where we brought in an outside instructor (one just this past weekend, as a matter of fact), all self-defense oriented, not just stand and plink. I don't know how much it costs to rent an entire bay for yourself, we usually had around 25 people and spent the whole day or whole weekend there. But they seem to be open to more realistic training.

If it isn't busy you can have the bay all day.. If it is busy I think they request that you limit your time to a couple hours.

You can bring your own targets but I am unsure of using shotgun / rifle on the pistol bays.. I know I can shoot my Glenfield 75 22lr on the pistol bay but that doesnt mean much. I did see some LEOs that had their rifles sitting on the table in one of the pistol bays. So that might mean something!

Call out there and ask the people who run it are really nice and helpful and don't make you feel dumb for asking questions.

Oh and yes you can do all kinds of practicle training, even rapid fire :)
