Guns typically don't provide much deterrent if your not home
:iagree:

We have several very large dogs in our home. My wife asked me the other day why I leave the light on in the dog room with the blinds open. I told her that if somebody is looking to come in our home uninvited, I'd like them to see the dog room with 5 very large empty crates so they know what they are up against should they decide to come in. I'd like to think a room with nothing but large empty dog crates would be a fairly good deterrent.
As I was reading the first few lines of your post, the last line jumped into my head as well. That just isnt a bad idea at all. I have a yippy dog for alarm duty. A big crate might get a ner-do-well to think the Lhasa has a buddy. I like it.

I don't understand how people in 2016 can just not have an alarm system. It's $15 a month that buys you a whole lot of peace of mind.

Since are all talking about dogs, I just got a puppy Belgian Malinois He's about 6 months old now. Sweet dog, but I don't know how he would take to an intruder in the house (Good thing to bring up to the wife). Gotta love the deterrent of having a rather large dog, he's about 40lbs and counting.

I have to throw out some praise to the lady who decided to take actions into her own hand by not only going out to buy a firearm but going to learn how to use one as well. :thumbs2:

It is okay if alarm systems are cute/handsome! :-) Please do take the tutus and hoodies off the pups when you go to work though. It may not be in standing with the "big crate" communications we're trying to send.

... and absolutely no protection whatsoever. It might have alerted her, if she could hear it in the shower. That can be pretty "iffy", given the wide variation in alarm systems, how much noise they put out, and the layout of the home. Also, if the person has a hearing impairment, that can contribute also. You don't wear hearing aids in the shower if you want them to keep working.

When my house was being built, with an alarm system, I insisted on a 120dB sounder outside my house. If I'm in the bedroom, on the opposite side of the house, and don't have my aids in, I can't hear it. I don't shower or sleep with my aids in my ears.

Where I live, police response during the day might be pretty good. At night though, we can generally count on at least a 30 minute wait unless a Sheriff's deputy just happens to be in the area. Our police department does not work 24 hours. At night, all 911 calls go to the County Sheriff.

I have a two tier alarm system. The first tier is very sensitive and goes off all the time. It's when the 2nd tier goes off that is time to go investigate.

Tier 1 also keeps your feet warm when you sleep and is otherwise known as a wiener dog. When he barks the usual response is "Shut up Scooter" This alarm goes off every day when I come home.

Tier 2 is a 40lb very intelligent mutt and when she growls or barks, there is something to growl or bark at not because the wind is blowing outside. I've never had a false alarm out of the 2nd Tier. This alarm greats me at the door silently and is smart enough to know who belongs in the house and who doesn't.

Of course the 3rd Tier doesn't have to be mentioned.

What I heard you say was:
T1: Bark is worse than the bite
T2: Bark and bite may be comparable
T3. Bite is worse than the bark??

That is a good way to summarize my alarm system. :fire

I like the shower accessory idea, it would definitely cause a burglar to rethink his career choice if he saw me coming towards him with a gun in my hands naked and wet. Even if I didn't have to shoot him, his therapy sessions would last for years.

"rlol"
Poor guy/gal probably never would even notice the "gun"! Would be institutionalized and curled up a fetal position, rocking back and forth in a corner! "rlol" :smilelol5:

Sorry, just saying, things you can't un-see

The other dogs may bark for whatever reason, but the big chocolate one when he barks you better go see what's up!

The 2 Bostons won't bark. The Corgi though- he barks very loud. Unfortunately they are all cowards. The alarm is not usually on in the daytime when we are home ( it is at night ). Best defense is still a firearm.

I have 2 Mini-Schnauzers and they are a great alarm system during the day. Unfortunately a little too good and very sensitive as we live in an apartment and anyone even walking near the entrance of the 4 doors (2 downstairs 2 upstairs) alerts them and they start growling and some barking. They start barking and going crazy as soon as someone gets on the stairs up to our door. While a couple 25-30lb dogs don't look all that impressive, the male has a pretty menacing sounding bark and is all to ready to back that up with bite if its someone he doesn't know. He is very protective of my wife and does not like strange men around her.
