It seems crass to discuss this when good people are dead, but the living can learn from this. That shotgun was out for a long time (about 4 seconds) while the concealed carrier made a slow, one handed draw move. I don't know if he thought he was being discrete or what. At that point, all the shooter had to do is act, pull the trigger. Our good guys were reacting and that takes longer, sometimes the rest of your life.

The link wildbill posted said there were two parishioners that shot the suspect. I only see the one firing. Was it a single shot or two shots?
The shooting occurred at the church in White Settlement, Texas, a community located a few miles from Fort Worth. Authorities said an armed parishioner also shot the gunman at the same time as Wilson.

“The suspect is deceased, and the threat has stopped thanks to the heroic action of those two parishioners at the church,” White Settlement Police Chief J.P. Bevering said at a news conference. The second parishioner has not been named.

The vid shows only one parishioner shooting. The sheriff said “action”, not shots, I think he was referring to the parishioner who stood up first.

One aspect not (yet) mentioned by John Correia is that that the first parishioner did the "draw from the drop" which is a no-no in most cases. To me, the parishioner didn't have many good options, but perhaps his best option was to "get off the X" and run.

The deceased congregant believed a verbal de-escalation would resolve the issue. He firmly believed that. He did not believe it would be violent. Every LEOKA report has noted that LEs killed/assaulted in the line of duty underestimated the situation, either regarding the motivation/drive of the offender, or the "risk" that the offender perceived in the exchange. EVERYONE was waiting for verbal resolution.

Not faulting anyone, but with that many people around, there was no reason for at least one team member to covertly have a weapon out. If the more experienced folks thought that doing so might cause another team member to attempt to draw, and escalate the situation, that would be a training issue.
I've been given the impression that unless the assailant already has a weapon out, perhaps even in use, that an attempt at de-escalation is just about a must to avoid being brought up on charges by a prosecutor. "Why didn't someone just try to talk him down, they didn't have to just go and shoot him like that", or some other statement to that effect will be made. Self-defense laws pretty much seem to have a "react" clause built into them, since most of us cannot articulate things the way someone with legal system training can. Please note, I'm not advocating for anything, just making an observation that the laws are written in a manner that puts the armed citizen at a disadvantage against violent assailants.

Actually, he did mention it. It's late in the video, long after most people (myself all to frequently included) stop listening.

The church member closest to the murderer is a hero.

He drew knowing most likely he would die.

Facing down and drawing on a man dressed in black (with a black mask?) at close range holding a shotgun pointed at him takes bravery I do not have.

It gave his friends the few seconds of distraction they needed to save the flock.

RIP

The video was traumatic for me not by what I saw but what I heard. Women screaming in anguish is not something I ever want to hear again. For me it brings back things I would prefer to forget.

I was reluctant to post the video. I realized it might violate the forum rules, but I felt the educational value was worth the risk. I thank the management for understanding.

I pray this will be the last church shooting in Texas.

I fear these cowards will just move to softer targets.

I only heard three shots. The first two from the gunman who killed the two innocents next to him then the third and final shot from the good guy Mr. Wilson killing the bad guy.
I practice regularly at the distance between Mr. Wilson and the bad guy with a steel target and usually manage about 8 hits out of ten shots. Mr. Wilson's marksmanship was amazing under the circumstances.
I also wonder about Mr. Wilson's one-shot in that incident. I would have been inclined to fire multiple rapid shots at the suspect. Perhaps there may have been people in the way or he trusted his marksmanship enough to fire just once.
Please know and follow the rules of firearms safety.

I believe the murderer triggered a third shot simultaneously with Jack Wilson’s shot.

Murderer went down fast from the head shot, didn’t need a follow up.
