South Africa: Olympian to be charged with killing girlfriend

According to news reports, Oscar Pistorius was arrested in Pretoria, South Africa, Thursday and will be charged with murder in the shooting death of his girlfriend.

Unnamed friends or associates reportedly said the shooting was an accident.

South African law apparently limits statements that the police can make before a suspect appears in court. (Not that I claim to know anything about South African law.)

Mr. Pistorius made history by competing in the Olympics with prosthetic lower legs. He is a double amputee.

Why do these accidents happen, and why are so many fatal? Every incident like this is a disaster to supporters of the right to armed self defense.

Two possibilities, IMHO: One, it was no accident...there were reports of police called for domestic disturbances multiple times. (I've been married for over 20 years. The wife and I have had our share of arguments and yet we've never had LEOs called out on us...so how loud does it have to get?) Or two, the man failed to identify his target before pulling the trigger, with the result of someone being shot who shouldn't have been shot.

Sneaking into a house at night in the dark is not a particularly good idea, especially, if you know someone inside is armed.

I have always told my kids to turn on the light and to immediately say their name if they hear anything.

Neither is shooting a girlfriend.

Regardless of the legality, two lives and to some extent two families are destroyed or irreparably damaged. Only the lawyers are going to benefit.
