...it was a Detective on my PD and another man in LEO who invented and perfected the old 3-antenna trackers that they put in the money pack...I've worked robberies with them...we tracked on our car unit to the house...took the hand-held unit, and tracked it to a clothing bag in the boy's closet...it took 40 seconds...not 2 hours...I doubt they had a tracker/GPS device...( with a dye pack, all they would have had to do is walk by the cars)...even if so, they could have moved the cars off one by one and watched the blip...no excuse for what they did...

Maybe they forgot to charge the battery.

What I meant is that if the battery was running low, it may have pooped out before they could find the final location/car.

This is a slippery slope. What will it be over next? A shoplifter? Checkpoint for large sugary drinks?

I think this is a loose-loose scenario for LE. Do what it takes to catch a bad guy, and run the risk of crossing the line.

Let him go, and you'll get accused of being lazy, corrupt, or incapable.

I think they missed it here, but I'm definitely not claiming to have the answer, especially in the heat of the moment.

Hopefully it's a learning point for all involved and a better, more thought out response can be called upon in the future.

Worst part of it is the search and all results thereof will probably get tossed, and the BG go free as a result of illegal search.

So not only do 19 law abiding citizens have their rights violated, it will have all been for nothing.

I don't assume that what the news posts is correct, but pretending I do, the searches were all reported to have been consensual...soooo....??? No real risk of that.

Just last week the media reported I arrested a guy for PI out of his house. The comments section was ripping me and my dept.

I actually arrested him for valid onsite charges, and hours later, a constable charged him with a JP warrant for PI, so it's all on the same jail record. That didn't matter, it generated traffic for their site so why fix it. Revenue from reporting accurately < revenue from ad traffick.

Generally speaking, news media's (print, TV, on-line) reason for existence is not delivering well researched and fact-checked news, it is for creating revenue for the business and delivering entertainment to its readers/viewers. Critical thinkers discovered this dirty little secret a long time ago .
