Galco Jackass Shoulder Holster//UPDATE PICS

#1

Post by snatchel »

When I was deployed, I used a leather rig (forgot who made it) when carrying around a Sig 226 around base. For the past couple of winters I have thought about grabbing another to wear around, but never did spring the cash for one. This winter I went ahead and pulled the trigger.

As I said, I don't recall the manufacturer of my old holster, but I'm pretty sure it was a Galco Miami Classic. I started doing research, and learned that I may have to re-think the way I carry now as opposed to openly carrying before. The jackass rig is designed so that the gun rides at a big of a barrel-up angle, so I started looking for one. How I came to own this one is a story on it's own, but let's get to the review.

The rig was bought specifically for a G17. I carry it often, but not quite every day. I'd say about 70% of the time now-a-days. I carry it appendix, strong side OWB, and strong side IWB. Now I have a 4th option.

Fit & Finish: The fit is definitely tight. Very tight. It's going to take a week or two to break in properly, like most leather holsters out there. I had to force the gun in several times before it was loose enough to actually trust being able to draw from it. I expected this, and the same applies to the magazine holster. The finish of the leather is fantastic, everything you'd expect from Galco. All the pieces were there with instructions, and it was easy enough to assemble.

Comfort: Comfortable. Anyone who has worn a shoulder holster will tell you it takes quite a bit of time to get it adjusted properly. If you have an idea of how it's supposed to fit, and where you want it, it's much easier. I'm sure i'll have to make more adjustments yet, but for now I'm square. Under a light North Face soft shell jacket, it concealed as well as any IWB/OWB holster. It's going to take some time to get used to the weight on my shoulders as I haven't felt that in quite some time, but it's by no means uncomfortable.

Disclaimer: I know there are folks that don't like shoulder holster. That's your preference, and I'm ok with it. They have a reputation of looking great but performing terribly--I disagree. Shoulder holsters can be fantastic. They have a niche, certainly, and should not be considered as an only option. As a matter of fact, unless you have a disability that requires you to carry shoulder exclusively, I'd recommend something else if you are only going to have 1 holster.

The day I took my NC CCW proficiency test I couldn't find my yaqui slide for my G17. The only other holster I had was an Uncle Mikes shoulder rig that I used for hunting. No choice. I put it on.

When the Sheriff saw it (instructor was a Deputy and the test was at the SO range) he said "I'll let you use that, but if I see your muzzle cover anything but the ground I'll disqualify you immediately and toss you off the range."

Back then (95-96-ish?) the test was a timed course of fire, about 50 rounds in 8 or 10 sections, and every section was started from the holster. No pressure.

What's my point?
I like shoulder holsters. If we ever get OC here, I'll be buying a nice one for my P2KSK.

Looks like a comfortable rig. Any odd bulges from the muzzle or back of the slide with a jacket on?

Nope, none that I have seen. The magazine carrier is bulkier than I would like, but it doesn't bulge. The gun doesn't either, which surprised me.

Well then, I might have to reconsider one of those for my G30.

For sure, C-Dub. I'd recommend this particular rig. I know you can find them on Amazon for the $120 range, and i'd say money well spent.

I was checking the Galco website to determine the difference between this one and the Miami Classic. It looks like the main difference is the angle the gun can be carried. Is that about it?

Yep, pretty much. That was the deciding factor for me. With smaller guns I'm not sure it would really matter. For full sized, it makes a difference.
