Encounter with Texas DPS

Happened a few months ago, hardly ever get to come on anymore with my crazy work hours to post. I was driving home from work and noticed to young girls on the side of the freeway with a flat tire. One girl looked very scared. Decided to stop and help. I pull over, gun is in the truck. As I am changing the flat tire, DPS pulls up. Never got his name or anything. He helps me finish, then asks for my ID as we are walking back our vehicles. I hand him my DL and CHL, tell him the Gun is in the truck. He hands them back, and tells me my regestration and state are expired. Then we both get in our vehicle and leave.

That worked out nicely. You did a good deed, and so did the officer. Almost sounds like a Liberty Mutual commercial.

Not to denigrate your good deed, but why was your gun in the trunk? There are people who will put a couple of helpless girls out as bait, and once you're out of the car, the big guy with a weapon appears to rob or carjack you. The frightened girl may have been frightened because of what they were planning.

Something to think about...

EXACT thing happened to me about 40 years ago. I didn't have a gun. No one was hurt and I only lost a few dollars... so that ended well too....

It's my opinion that today with everyone having a cell phone, there is no need to pull over and help anyone on the road. You are only taking a chance (rolling the dice) that is not necessary.

I won't do it unless it is actually an accident with obvious injuries. And then I will make sure my gun is on my hip before I even stop my vehicle.

Good contact with DPS for the OP. :thumbs2:

...my gun is ALWAYS on my hip...and you guys are spot on...best bait to catch a sucker is a damsel in distress...been used since time began...and then there's the agenda SHE might have...and accusations to go with it...pays to be suspicious...VERY suspicious...

Well, I more or less agree. If it looks like a single woman who is in a dangerous spot while she waits for help, I may do do what I can to help her - park behind her with emergency flashers going, encourage her to move the car if possible etc.

Robberies using a "helpless woman", sometimes with a baby as bait, seems to be creeping up from south of the border. The locals warned about this ploy when I worked in Mexico.

...they use recordings of crying babies/children to get you to fling open your door for home invasion, too...seems we Americans have a reputation for being soft-hearted...

I will sometime not holster on my way home from work, if I am planning to go straight home. Much more comfertable of a drive, however most of the time because of this situation I do holster before leaving work. Might sound crazy to some, but I stoped to help because I felt that is what God was asking me to do.

...not the least bit crazy...but the same God would have you be wise as a serpent and keep both eyes open so that you get home to care for your own... :thumbs2:

Can's argue with that
