Opinions on [pre-paid legal]?

I talked with a guy from [Pre-paid legal service] at the recent instructor course. Sounds pretty attractive, and they give instructors their product....but I'd like to know what the opinion around here is.

First off, once you let them in, is it difficult to keep them from taking more than 5-10 minutes of your class time, or do they demand more time?

Do they really do what they say they'll do, or do they take students' money and then weasel their way out when it comes time to do the work?

Any other info would be appreciated.

My opinion is that when it comes time for my next renewal, I will be calling Instructors before I sign up for a class and will be asking them if they allow/condone/include [pre-paid legal] sales pitches in their Class. If their answer is "Yes", I will continue shopping to find an Instructor that does not participate in this Marketing Technique.

If I was an Instructor and felt it necessary to include this type of sales of any product/service in my instruction, I would make sure that it was an OPTIONAL participation by students. A period of the class where it is optional for those interested to remain and those that are not interested to leave. I will not be held hostage and forced to waste my time listening to anything that is not a part of the TXDPS training requirements.

Conceptually, I like the idea of legal coverage in the event that I have to use my firearm. We have all kinds of insurance, life, auto, home, flood, health, mortgage, etc. So in theory, the logic behind the product would be tough to argue.

Now, how much do I trust them? Do they offer a good product? What's their record in court? Are their customers happy? All questions that I'd need answers to before I allowed one of their reps into my class. When and if I do, they would only be allowed to share their info during a break. The student would have no obligation to listen or participate.

We signed up primarily to get the coverage for ourselves. Their representative came out to my office and ran me through the program and since by day I work for a lawfirm, I was pretty scrutinizing and I believe they're legit. Once we formally signed up, we agreed to let him spend 5 minutes in one of our classes. I think this was for us to get a feel for how to present the product going forward. He kept to his time frame and I don't anticipate them coming to our class regularly if at all again going forward. It's just something I'll spend a few minutes on and offer to my students. No hard sell, no obligation.

I'm not against it at all. I think it looks like a great service and pretty affordable. I just wanna see what that "catch" is. LOL.

Here goes.... I personally like the idea of [pre-paid legal] in the respect that most CHL students do not understand that if they are truly prepared to use deadly force or even threaten the use of deadly force, the legal system comes into play. I have referred to the legal system as a "meat grinder" in the since it does not necessarily care about you or being fair. Most CHL's are not familiar with the legal system, for obvious reasons and want to expect fairness, reason and subjectivity to their particular situation. In other words, a CHLer involved in a justified shooting might expect a few questions, fill out some forms, pay a lawyer a couple of hundered dollars and go home, this is simply not true. As I have said, we are found to be justified after all of the facts are in and then at someone else's point of view.

That being said, I feel it foolish not to consider the legal ramifications involved if you are truly prepared to use dealdly force. I am not saying that [pre-paid legal] is the only way but I believe not having a lawyer in your "self-defense" plan to be irresponsible.

I filled mine out right before you did. I'm surprised they haven't gotten in touch with either of us. They must have enough business and not need ours LOL

That's right...you sure did. Weird. And I've been doing my "shameless plugs" for them during my class. I didn't do much, I just showed them the flyer and told them what it was about and told them the website and then went back to business. LOL.
