Applicant Photos?
What is the current status regarding DPS requirements for applicant photos?
Are they accepting CHL-6's with "Use DL License" written on the form for any applicant (new or renew) with a Texas DL or ID?
I know this was discussed before, but I'm not sure whether the issue was ever resolved?

Re: Applicant Photos?
Yes, it is. As long as they has a 'valid' Texas drivers license they will use it. Make sure to put 'Use current Texas Drivers License photo' on the CHL-6.
I do know some instructors are still sending photos along 'just in case', but the option is valid to use without sending photos.

DPS is telling instructors different things on this, but we have had several students return to us with letters from DPS that they needed photos after all. I would have your students include photos.
Re: Applicant Photos?
So far so good.
Re: Applicant Photos?
Is there a way you could get a copy of one of those letters? This is totally contradictory to what was told to us in Instructors Class, and I have verified it with the CHL department upper management that they can do this.croc870 wrote:DPS is telling instructors different things on this, but we have had several students return to us with letters from DPS that they needed photos after all. Re: Applicant Photos?
I emailed DPS and this is the reply I received:
Yes, any new applicant that has a valid Texas DL or ID card can opt to have us use their photo from their DL/ID card. They must hand write- "Please use my Texas DL photo" on the CHL-6 form.
Now, this only applies to those applicants that have a Texas DL/ID card. Your students that have out of state DL/ID cards have to mail us actual passport photos still.

Re: Applicant Photos?
We are one of those "just in case" instructors. Still taking photos, still sending them in.superchief wrote:just another reason the DPS needs to write it down and put it on the website.
Sure would be great if DPS would communicate with ALL of us instructors - not just the recently certified ones, and expect them to tell the rest of us.
Re: Applicant Photos?
I know for a fact that student's do not need to mail in photos. But, and this is a big but.. they must still send in a CHL-6 form and they must hand write on the form to please use their Texas DL photo. If they fail to write this or if they send in a bad photo, then yes they will get rejected.
To sum up- If they wish to have DPS use their Texas DL photo, they need to hand write this on the CHL-6 form, AND they should not send in any photos. I personally know some people that have emailed their new application documents this way and were acceptable. They did not need to mail DPS anything at all.
To take things a step further, you may even have the students type up a letter in large font stating "Please use my Texas DL photo" and include that along with the other paperwork just as an added bonus.

Re: Applicant Photos?
The DPS response to me seems quite clear on the photos, and I will proceed based on the information they provided.
The bigger question is why isn't this information being disseminated to ALL of the instructors. There appears to be zero communication to us. I learned about the new CHL-100 forms here as well as the audits, none of these things have been officially communicated to us.

Re: Applicant Photos?
It is clear; DPS will use a Texas Driver's License photo for a CHL, if the student wishes. Just write it on the CHL-6 "Photo Holder."

Re: Applicant Photos?
I was excited to receive my license today. However, I was surprised & disappointed when I saw my Texas driver's license picture was used. I paid to have passport photos taken by MorphoTrust USA (L-1 Identity Solutions) when I got my fingerprints done. I submitted the photos in the separate, sealed envelope with my name on it, along with the CHL 6, as required. I wanted to make sure the photos met the size, background, clarity requirements. These photos were in addition to the photo taken for ID with the fingerprints. I did not write on the app to use my driver's license picture.
I am not trying to whine, just not sure why the older, less flattering picture was used when I went to the trouble & expense to use a different photo. Is there anything that can be done to replace the photo on the CHL?
Thanks!

Re: Applicant Photos?
Yes, anyone can get a new photo at anytime. You have to mail in a CHL-70, CHL-6, new passport photos & check for $25. You should hand write on CHL-70 that you are wanting to just update photo only.
