I'm not a CHL Instructor yet (waiting to be scheduled for the class) but I do have a couple decades of corporate training experience. Adjusting a class on the fly in response to student interests is a great thing as long as (1) you still cover the required material; and (2) the class all wants to shift in the same direction. In my experience, everyone (especially the instructor) enjoys it when students are engaged and actively learning. And that happens most when they are interested.

I typically build a little time into a course to allow jumping down an interesting rabbit hole or two so item 1 isn't a problem. As for number 2... every class is different. Sometimes they will be a bunch of peas in a pod, and other times they will want to go in completely opposite directions. In those cases I try to accommodate the differing interests by giving each of them a little attention, but there obviously isn't time to talk about everything that every student finds interesting. One challenge in these cases is to try to avoid allowing the most vocal students to direct the flow of the class for everyone.

Thanx guys ! As for "training methods", I've included simple range scenarios one can do on Lonesome range visits or range visits with a buddy....numbered paper plates, shooting from cover, high indexed drawing practice, etc....

I would just like the extra the extra topics for those quiet, timid classes where no one is willing to share a thought. :???:

I've only held a few classes although I find that concealment options/choices & transitioning from in/out of vehicle while staying concealed is a direction during class that gets students interacting and I've learned some things as well. I also include in every class how to go about police officer interaction while carrying a firearm. Students are put at ease by knowing what to expect from an officer and how they should treat the situation.

Or have a few minutes for an actual victim of assault/burglary/theft to speak.
Just know that, if you do that, you have to get prior approval from DPS for your "Guest Instructor"

There is a form for that.

Off Topic, Has anyone herd of an Instructor in the Texas City area that Takes students out to dinner and call it a class? Or an Instructor only shooting students from the 3 yard line? I ask because the general public that go and see my spouse for finger prints seem to talk about it alot.
We shoot all of our students at the 3 yard line. Trying to hit them from any farther away means we could miss.

Seriously, I know there are instructors out there that are not following the rules. Hence the reason for instructor audits being performed. Integrity of instructors needs to be held at the highest level possible. However, it is not just Texas. I saw an article last week from my home area in Missouri where an instructor and at least 5 others were charged with selling completion certificates for CHL with no class required. :banghead:

As for guest instructors, it is no problem if you bring in a LEO or DA for instance. However, as Crossfire said, it must be written into your curriculum and be pre-approved by DPS via the guest instructor request process.
