I am being told by a range that I use for qualifying students, that about a year back DPS approved the use of a shortened B27 targets.
The shortened version is about 24"x30" instead of the standard (huge) 24"x45".

Has anybody else heard of these short targets being approved? Is it formalized somewhere?

At the March class, they specifically said no and it had to be the regular B27

The small ones remove a large scoring area and this can be an issue for some students.

I believe the shorter targets are actually about 24x36 or so. If they actually chopped off 15" from the length that would put the bottom of the target just below the 8 ring.

But it does chop off the bottom part of the scoring area for sure.

Ditto for the April Instructors class. Full size B27s only. I suspect your range ran out of full size or ordered the wrong ones.

I had not seen the cut-off B-27 but I wonder if this is what RSD is looking for in their audit when they ask about targets and scoring.

Not to be redundant but they said specifically no reduced sized targets in the June instructor class too.

From Law Enforcement Targets anyway, the "reduced size" targets carry a designation of B-27E. E for "economy" I think. Their "standard" is B-27S. We currently have both kinds (in orange) at our place. The E version is used for practice and the S version for testing.

In measuring both, the color on the "economy" version stops about 1/2" below the 7 (3) ring. On the "standard" version, the color drops down another 9". And yes, that 9" can make the difference between pass or fail for some students (typically subconsciously anticipating recoil) who need those 3-point holes.

Graybeard....hope I'm not stepping on toes but you do know that the only colors allowed by DPS for the targets is red, green, blue and black...right?

I'm sure he meant red. You know - red, orange... in the Texas sun, who can tell the difference?

Ya, one would think they could come up with a better test question than "4 approved colors", especially something like red, that has a tendency to fade so quickly in the Texas heat. The one we keep on the wall in classroom for explanation purposes is blue, actually my favorite color. But, lately I have sorta preferred the "red", as holes do seem to show up better in it at all distances.

I agree -- no targets other than the full-size B27, in one of the approved colors. I HAVE, however, seen some photos on the net of Texas "CHL students" proudly showing their "shortened" B27 target. Wonder if they qualified with those?

And, someone, please tell me why they have the "B27 question" on the STUDENT test? Of what possible importance is that for a student to know?!
