I have a confusing situation with my instructor certification. My vehicle was stolen in December of 2011 with a lot of my CHL information in it including instructor numbers and passwords. To be on the safe side, I contacted DPS and informed them of the situation and asked for a new number and password so I would not be associated with any wrongdoing that these thieves might attempt with this information. DPS agreed and gave me a new number and ID. I received the new ID and examined it to make sure all information was correct but didn't really pay much attention to the expiration date. So fast forward to this past summer when I get a notice that my certification is expiring in on my birthdate in xxxxxxx but now I look at my new CHL license and it has an expiration date of October 2015. So I called and waited on the phone for 30 minutes, so I gave up and sent an email. I got an email response that didn't even address the expiration issue but basically said I needed to send in a CHL-90 with current new qualifications (certified NRA instructor).
Im wanting to start instructing again but want to make sure Im good to go. Ive just taken the NRA instructor course and will be sending in my CHL-90 as requested. Did I slip through the cracks on a recertification due to them issuing a new number and ID? Whats your opinion? Just go with the new expiration date of 2015 and ignor the previous letter? Call again.....? Drive 150 miles and speak to them in person since it is so hard to get them on the phone?
Thanks in advance...

Re: Help Instructor with Unique Situation
I'm guessing it was your instructor's cert that expired, not your CHL. Everybody's cert expires 12/31/13. You'll need a renewal class and there are only a couple of weeks left.

Are you sure that's what the notice said? Your CHL license expires on your birthday. Everybody's CHL instructor certification expires at the end of odd years.captainkbt wrote:So fast forward to this past summer when I get a notice that my certification is expiring in on my birthdate in October of 2013 but now I look at my new CHL license and it has an expiration date of October 2015.

The letter did say my instructors cert that was expiring. Since I have been out of the CHL loop for a while, I have forgotten when it was supposed to expire. But Im sure that's it......the 12/31/12 expiration date. Somehow the letter got tossed so I cant go back and read it.sjfcontrol wrote:I'm guessing it was your instructor's cert that expired, not your CHL. Everybody's cert expires 12/31/13. You need to get the chl90. To DPS post-haste! And get a class scheduled. I imagine there aren't very many more to choose from. If I were you, I'd go thru the pain of actually talking to them on the phone an tell them your story. See what they suggest. If it goes into next year, you may need to take the full instructors class again.

Just got off the phone with DPS. Wasn't bad this morning....11 minute wait. It appears there is also a one year grace period for instructors to renew after their cert expires.....obviously just cant teach classes during this period. So Im good to go with an instructors recert class next year. Just need to get the process started with the CHL-90. I took the NRA certified trainer class last week, so Im good there also. This is my first renewal and haven't been teaching or keeping up with the process due to being extremely busy with other things.
Thanks so much for your response and information.
