Has anyone heard any updates on where the DPS is on the School Marshal training curriculum?

DPS is not in charge of School Marshal's program. TCLOE is the agency in charge (TX Commission on Law Enforcement).

Bill - I think you are thinking of Senate Bill 1857 that was the School Safety Certification. This is being run by DPS. It is the train the teacher bill. Sherrie's basic response to me was that DPS really didn't want input from CHL instructors because the instructors would be the ones being regulated/certified. It's been 6 months since I spoke with her on this subject, but I haven't heard anything recently, either.

Thanks. I knew we talked in our April class about DPS having a role in the process and Sherrie saying that they were trying to figure out exactly what that role would be.

We will have to 'qualify' to become school instructors. No word yet on what said qualification will be. I believe the school employees/CHLs will have to take approx 15 hours training. When the CHL course was 10 hours, we had to take 27 to 40 hours of training from DPS. That may give you an idea of what it will take.

They just finished retraining all the instructors AND a new instructor class. Maybe they will have a chance to plan the school program.

However, Sherri and her staff are still real busy processing CHL apps.

She said in our renewal class in November that they were going to take the time to put together a "quality product" (instructor class). And that they would certainly have to charge more than $100.

I don't see why it should cost more than $100. The did a 40 hour class for $100. They must be really making money on the instructor renewals.

You really think the small fee covers the costs? You also know your fees go into the general fund, right?

Most 'big name instructors' cost $700 for 20 students in a big class, $14,000.

Yes, I know it goes into the general fund but I don't think the legislature intends to lose money on the CHL program. :) I bet they are making money on the $25 they charge vets.

I don't have a problem with the cost, necessarily. I understand it goes into the general fund. I said a while back that the reduction in class time would, in turn, cause the price for class to drop. I tried to keep my class cost at the same level, but it didn't fare well. So I dropped my class price a bit. I also said that the drop in revenue for instructors would separate the hobbyists from the big guys. The cost for 'train the teacher' class will once again separate out the instructors who are serious about making a business/income from instruction. The fee is just the cost of doing business, and I am waiting patiently to be able to apply for this program.

The FBI charges $25 to check the fingerprints that are sent to them.

DPS has to create a curriculum. Salaries, supplies, perhaps pay expert, etc. Then a lesson plan, power points, etc. Rent training space, handouts, create and make tests, answer sheets. There will be a cost to open and run the range.
