Travel to Canada w/ handgun

We will be traveling by road to Vancouver, Canada. I have a Texas CHL and want to carry on the trip. All states between Texas and Canada honor Texas CHL except for the state of Washington. Also, non-residents are not allowed to carry into Canada; nor, will they grant a temporary permit to do so.
Any suggestions on what I can do with the gun in Washington and at the Canadian border will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Whatever you do, don't have it with you when you get to the Canadian border.
Perhaps you can Fed-Ex it to yourself at a hotel you will be staying at as soon as your return to US soil?

Stop at a gun store and make arrangements for them to store the weapon for you until your return to USA.

Can they do that without doing a written transfer both in and out?
I think I'd have to call a gun store near the border and speak to the manager.

This is a very common issue for U.S. citizens who visit Canada. Since it's not a sale or transfer of ownership I don't think any paperwork would be involved. I agree that you should call ahead and make some arrangements. The FFL will know the answer. Make sure to get a receipt.

Stop at a bank and rent a safety deposit box for a month.

Without a CHL how do you legally carry it into a bank?

In a box or gunrug?

And you show them your Texas DL and CHL for ID?

That's the form of ID I'd show when I walked in.

Since you can't carry in Washington, I'd say in a holster, properly concealed in Oregon or whichever state you will be in before you cross into Canada. Unless that state forbids carry in banks.

Joe, you didn't give us your itinerary. FWIW, neither NV, CA or OR recognize a Texas CHL...either.
Canada's handgun restrictions are a primary reason that we don't take our modest 'lil travel trailer to Alaska while we still have our health and servicable vehicles. Of course, cost of the journey raises its ugly head too.

If it stays at the gun store overnight, then according to the BATFE, a "transfer" has taken place. It has to be logged into their bound book and logged back out when picked up. I think you'd have to go through the NICS check to get it back. For that, they may charge whatever fee they charge for a transfer, like if they receive a gun someone bought on gunbroker, since it's basically the same process. If the BATFE were to do an inspection while the gun is there (unlikely, but possible) and it's not in the book, the store could get in trouble over it.
