Hello AF,
I just found this thread. I too got bit by the 1911 bug. Two days ago I purchased my first which is a Kimber Pro CDPII new out of the box. Now, I wish I could give you a range report but with my work schedule and this pesky rain that has befallen us, I haven't been able to run a round or two through it. Plus, there are far more people here that can give you the technical on such things. I will be using this for my CCW and give my Glock model 27 a break.
What I like about this Kimber is the slimmer profile that a single stack brings, added power from my .40sw , a normal sized frame (I know what you mean with how some compacts 'feel') and being a 4in barrel, still gives you a decent target shooter as well. This model also comes standard with the meprolight/trijicon sites. For me, this wasn't a buying point but its easier to find on the nightstand than my black miniglock.
When the flood waters recede, I'll try to get out to the range and maybe come back with some info. that may be more useful to you. Good luck and happy hunting. There is a lot to consider when wanting one of these. You can spend a little or a lot but it boils down to what you 'want' and what you really need in a defense weapon.
