Red dot optic suggestions

#1

Post by cmgee67 »

Hello all I am looking to set my AR up with a good optic. I’ve ran some vortex red dots and sig red dots and I am ready to move up to a really good quality red dot or holographic sight. The three I am currently looking at are the Trijicon MRO, AimPoint PRO, and the Eotech exps3. I think the battery life will be better with the mro or the pro over the exps3. However I like the holographic reticle more than a standard red dot. I know all three are proven options but the battery life on the eotech just isn’t up to par with the other two. I want to be able to leave the battery on year round. I intend on changing it out every year. This pretty much rules out the eotech. I know Holosun makes some good options now as well.

I've been shooting USPSA with red dots since the turn of the century. (Doesn't that sound impressive;-)

The C-More on my open gun has a VERY large dot. At pistol distances larger dot's are quicker. It uses a 1/3N battery.
My Ruger Mark III has a variable sized ULTRA Dot. I only switch to the smaller dots for finer work. For Steel Challenge, I used the largest dot.
My current AR has an inexpensive dot. It was under $100 but it's been a while. This AR also has side mounted Iron Sights.
I have an eotech on another AR. The batteries leaked. I cleaned it up and replaced parts. Now, I keep the batteries in a Zip Lock bag attached to the rifle. If they leak, it shouldn't ruin my gear.

In 2019, I put together a Carry Optics Glock 17 using a Trijicon. I got the biggest dot I could find. The feature I like is the automated on/off. It uses a 2032 battery. (Several of my dot scopes use the 2032.) I put a note in my calendar to change ALL the batteries in ALL of my dot scopes sometime this month. It's been a year. The feature I don't like is taking the scope off to change batteries. It means a trip to the range to sight it in afterwards.
See you at the range

I know Holosun has a mini red dot that allows you to change the battery without removing the optic…possibly more than one.

Op asked about an AR setup.. .
Of the ones you are choosing from my choice would be the Trijicon MRO. I have two I run on my ARs. I also have the Aimpoint Patrol Optic. 2nd in my opinion. I no longer own any EOtechs.

Watch mrgunsandgear reviews of them and take his input also.

Thanks. I did and I think I am leaning towards the MRO as well. Thanks for the feedback on yours. I like how light that one is compared to the the other two.

I’m interested in the MRO also. I have a Aimpoint T2 Micro on one of my SBRs, and I like it a LOT, but they’re not cheap. At their going rate, I probably wouldn’t buy another one, even though I have no complaints outside of the price. I have a Gen II Primary Arms SLx Advanced Push Button Micro Red Dot Sight mounted on my PC Carbine, and I believe that the quality is definitely there for such an affordable RDS ($149.95 right now), although it’s not quite in the same league as the Aimpoint.

Primary Arms has a new one coming out that’s kind of interesting. Although it is a micro, it’s not a true RDS either. Rather, it’s a 1x prism sight with an etched and illuminated ACSS "Cyclops" reticle. Being a prism sight, the eye box and eye relief aren’t quite as forgiving as a traditional RDS is, but it’s not bad either; and you have some built in ranging capabilities with the ACSS reticle.

Price is right around $250, and no, I don’t work for them.

Have you looked at the Vortex AMG UH1- Gen 2?. I have used Eotechs in the past but am very, very smitten with the UH1. Just a suggestion.

I have an EOTech EXPS3-4 on my AR. It's the first red dot I've owned and picked it up from a guy on another message board. I've heard horror stories of battery life issues with them but I leave mine off until I need it. It's easy enough to turn on quickly and I love the reticle on it. Yes the battery doesn't last long enough to leave it on for "years" and it's bulkier than the Aimpoint and other similar models, but it's a trade off I'm willing to live with.

I go for American-made first, non-Chinese second (which leaves out Holosun and most Primary Arms, not to mention dozens of other companies). That being said I'm extremely happy with my Aimpoint (Sweden) and Trijicon (almost all US) optics. The battery life on EOTech is terrible, I no longer own one.

Several Aimpoint and Trijicon optics can be left on for years, but changing the batteries each year isn't a bad idea regardless.

I guess EOTech battery life is horrible when compared to Aimpoint's and Trijicon's that you can leave on for years. As far as my EOTech, it's more than enough to get me through a weekend of shooting a rifle class. It auto powers off after a few hours of use unless you push one of the brightness button's (snooze) to keep it on. Previous generation EOTech's had issues with battery life. Mine has not given me any issues.

If Eotech would add a “shake awake” feature I think that would awesome. That not only helps with battery life because of the auto power off but it also means when you need it you can just pick it up. Of course if you keep it riding in the vehicle then it’s always on due to vibration. 6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other I suppose.

Interesting. I’ve ran primary arms of
Various kinds for a few years. They are all
Pretty decent.

I think eotech has my favorite reticle. Just not the battery life and weight I want it to be at.
