According to the report, the NYPD has used 12-pound trigger pulls for more than 100 years but will now be issuing guns with five-pound trigger pulls. The NYPD says the data speaks for itself.
It's about time. A 12 pound trigger pull is too much and does affect accuracy. But only new recruits will get the lighter trigger pull. That's idiotic.
They put the 12lb triggers there in the first place to reduce accidental discharges... No word on if they are providing the new recruits better gun handling training to make up for the change.
COL Applegate had some great words to say in his Close-Combat Files book. Essentially the 20% hit rate that NYPD experiences in actual gunfights is a combination of #1 police officers not devoting much time and effort to marksmanship and gun handling and #2 unrealistic training (i.e. front sight focus only).
It's a training issue that NYPD doesn't want to invest the time or resources to fixing.

Accident just looking for a place to happen! I know cops that are dedicated shooters, I also know cops that shoot only when they have to qualify, so there's that!

Kahr handguns used to be authorized as back up/off duty guns for NYPD officers, but then the NYPD decided that the Kahr pistols would have to have 12 pound triggers as well. Kahr couldn’t or wouldn’t modify their pistols to 12 pound trigger pulls, so NYPD banned them for use by officers. Maybe they’ll be re-authorized again now.
