Gun Safe for Car

Now, for the more important stuff. I want to be ultra responsible with my gun when I have to leave it in my car. What is a good recommendable gun safe for the car that would be recognized by the Texas DPS and law enforcement?

I saw the neatest thing at the mall in the "Sharper Image" store...

It was a "Secure-It" Center of Mass-like safe, with a biometric sensor that will unlock the safe for access to the contents...Still had a key to back up the sensor...

And for only $229.00 (about, as best I can recall), a neat gadget for the techno crowd...

It also secured to the vehicle in the same manner...

They show everything else you could stuff in there except a full size 1911 and spare magazine...Which I know would fit nicely in there...

They sure ar proud of this thing, considering the price...But hey, I'm a techno-geek...I like stuff like this...

I just got my medium sized centerofmass safe for the car and it is awsome. Fits my 2 CCWs (not at the same time) and an extra clip. I've got it attached right now by the cable but I want to figure out how to mount it too. Atleast when it's just secured by the cable I can pull it into my lap to access it. Seems perfect for what I will need it for. It seemed pricey ($38.99 to my door), but I'm very happy with it.

Another "me too" on the center of mass safes. The wife and I both have them in our vehicles.

They also work great for checking your firearm at the airport if you ever fly with it.

+ 1 from me on these as well. Keeps the gun safe if you have to valet park and you can't carry. Won't stop a determined theif with a cable cutter or huge screw driver but will certainly deter the typical smash the window and take everything they can gab stop theives.

I bought a truck vault from http://www.consolevault.com. It bolts down to the inside of the console and has the option to be a keyed or combo entry. It has good space inside it, as I've put a SA 9mm EMP and a 4" 1911 with enough space to probably fit something else inside. That may just be because of the model truck I have and the space available for it. It is form fitting to certain consoles of differing makes of trucks. The installation wasn't as easy as they claimed because the stock bolts weren't long enough, so I took it to a stereo installation place and paid like $15 to get it in. It makes me feel more secure knowing that it's bolted in rather than just being held by a cable. It's not as inexpensive as other cabled boxes, but I thought it worked better for me. They also offer a cabled box, but it's expensive.

Wish they had those consolevaults for a 1999 Expedition. They only start at 2000 after the console change. I'll have to wait for my next vehicle to get one of these. I've talked to a welder about making me a safe we can bolt down to the frame under the passenger seat, but loss of my job means I can't afford to pay him to start the work.

I needed a secure (a relative term) hiding place for a gun in my SUV. Console vaults are not made for my model, and I wanted something that would be less expensive and maybe a little harder to find for a thief in a hurry.

My truck has second row seats that fold forward and down, so I used heavy stainless steel metal screws and fender washers to screw my Center of Mass box to the floor beneath the seat I most often fold-up when I want to carry something long in the back. If you want to take an extra step to make the box less visible to someone who might look under the seat, you can put it under the carpet if it is unattached. I also discovered that with a hole drilled in the seat frame, a large padlock will lock the folding seat frame down so that the box is trapped under the seat with no room to get to it or to pry the lid off. The small space and angle involved makes it difficult if not impossible to use bolt cutters on the padlock, so I feel like the combination gives me pretty good security for little effort and expense. If I have to disarm when people may be in a position to see me, I simply un-holster while sitting behind the steering wheel, wrap the gun in a silicone cloth I keep in the console, and set it on the floor behind the folding front seat before getting out to do the lock-up procedure. My system doesn't allow quick access, but I was primarily concerned with theft prevention.
