Feds raid Gilbert business for fraud, money laundering

A Gilbert business was raided by federal officials Wednesday on suspicion of fraud and money laundering.

Officials say Calvary Gun Manufacturing was the target of the search and seizure warrant.

The business is near Copper and Guadalupe roads.

It’s unclear what officers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms took from the business or if anyone was arrested.

GILBERT, Ariz. -- Federal agents raided an east Valley gun manufacturing warehouse and confiscated at least 1,000 firearms.

The seizure took place at Cavalry Arms Corporation near Cooper and Guadalupe roads.

ATF agents seized box after box of shoulder-fired rifles and hundreds of stocks, barrels and scopes in connection with an investigation into federal firearms violations at the facility.

"There's got to be something going on or they wouldn't be here," said Brandon Hepworth, who works nearby.

The ATF and the U.S. Attorney's Office refused to comment on why authorities served a search warrant at the warehouse.

The owner of the company has not been arrested. Those who work nearby say they believe he is a reputable licensed gun dealer.

"He's a nice guy, friendly," Hepworth said. "I never asked him the particulars of what he was doing."

Stacks of high-powered firearms were placed on tables for the media to view.

It's still not clear if the nature of the investigation is as serious as the evidence implies.

CBS 5 News tried reaching the owner of the company for comment to no avail.

I wonder if the truth will ever get out, something just smells fishy about the whole thing!

The ATF needs to be a investigative force not a law enforcement force...period

The BATFE raided firearms manufacturer Cavalry Arms for suspicion of fraud and money laundering, they also "took hundreds of guns from the scene, including AK-47s, assault weapons and high powered rifles." Here are my 2 big questions:

1. When did the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives begin to start regulating fraud and money laundering?
2. Even if they did why would they need to seize their firearms?

One firearms manufacturer told me of a similar situation where the ATF seized firearms and computers for 15 months, finally when it was all said and done they sent them a nice little letter stating that they didn't find anything and apologized for the inconvenience.

Congressman Phil Gingrey made the following statement that sheds light on what is happening with firearms manufacturers.

"Since 2002, 85 percent of American firearm manufacturers have been forced to close their doors. Let me repeat that, Mr. Chairman. Since 2002, 85 percent of American firearm manufacturers have been forced to close their doors."

Tell me there ain't a war on our guns going on!

This made me angry, regardless of whether Cav arms is actually guilty of fraud and/or money laundering. They stack up a bunch of guns for a nice photo op so they can pat themselves on the back. The problem is these are not illegal weapons taken from the hands of violent criminals, they're inventory! This type of media pandering makes the situation out to be more than it really is, but I'm sure that is exactly what they were after.

I agree why would they need to be stacking up a bunch of rifles on tables if the investigation is for fraud and money laundering,what happened to due process,innocent til proven guilty,cases are being tried in the media before the guy or gal is even arrested

Well we all know the press and BATF would not want to infringe on the rights of illegals and confiscate their weapons, that might hurt thier feelings. They all know that the law-abiding folks don't stand a chance because the liberal media is behind the BATF and gun confiscations 110%.

My personal thought is that "Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms" would make a GREAT franchise store....I'll set up the first location, who's in for the second?? (I know you've seen the shirts with more or less that phrase - a few buddies and I were sitting around discussing that the other night)

I know that this is a "ok" deal not the best..but the profits from this go to help the Cav guys..plus if you are looking to build you a AR..this is a decent place to start, plus its time us "firearm enthusiast" to stick together

Being friends with the folks at CavArms, allow me to share the few details that I have been told:

1. All the inventory, computers, paperwork, and office materials were taken by the ATF.
2. They are still able to operate, manufacture, but this is difficult considering the lack of computers, paperwork, and office materials.
3. According to the warrant, there were "federal firearm law violations" and the agents were instructed to "Seize everything" (written on search warrant).
4. Despite this ATF intervention, they are still open for business and have obligations not only to their employees, but their suppliers as well so they need cash flow which is difficult when the government just stole all your stuff.

Needless to say, I'm very upset at this turn of events as the whole CavArms crew are friends of mine and I know them to be of high moral character. Any alleged illicit activity is just that -- alleged. Unfortunately, given how the ATF operates nearly unchecked, these transgressions by the Feds will go on unchecked and good, law-abiding gun manufacturers and dealers will continue to be subject to harassment.

If anyone here hasn't read the book "Unintended Consequences" by John Ross, I strongly suggest seeking it out and reading it now. While it is a work of fiction, I believe that the scenarios it proposes are not inconceivable given the current state of politic affairs.
