My wife hates my Glock

That's right. She said that carrying with a round chambered wouldn't be an issue if the gun had an external safety.

1) 1911 - hey, there are a ton of holsters and other after market options out there and you could get it in just about any caliber you want.
4) SA XD - that grip safety counts, right?

Those are really the two that I'm looking at. I asked her if she would be comfortable with a grip safety, instead of a thumb safety, and she agreed.

I really like the idea of a 1911, but I've never shot one. I've never shot an XD, either. I guess it's time to get to a range that rents handguns.

I'm sure somewhere a while back I saw a Glock slide that was modified to have an external safety lever on it. You might try Google.

If you don't pull the trigger a Glock won't fire. I beleive that! I carry a Glock 33 with one in the chamber in a SmartCarry. In case you don't know what a SmartCarry is. You wear it over your underware and your pistol rides right behind the zipper of your pants! I keep my finger off the trigger until I'm ready to shoot!

Go with an XD. No external safety, so no fumbling with one in the "heat of battle". However, it has the 1911 grip safety along with the trigger safety. That should make her feel more "comfortable".

You need to snag it in two opposite directions for it to go off in your waistband due to the grip safety. I make it a habit to stay off the grip safety when holstering. Beyond that, it will be just like your Glock. Point and shoot because there's no proper way to shoot it without being on the grip safety.

i was taught to holster with the same grip you would un holster with. do you reholster with you index and thumb or what?

Have you taken her to a range to fire your Glock? If you do that, she may see that it won't fire unless the trigger is pulled.

If this is just a way to justify buying another gun though, I understand. Definitely get a 1911. Everyone should own a 1911 (along with a .357 revolver, and a 12 gauge, and a .30-30 lever rifle, and...).

It has been brought to my attention that some may have mistaken what i said here. I suppose next time is hould add a smiling face or some sort of sign to let everyone know im joking around.

I am married myself and love it when my wife nit-picks the characteristics of my firearms, gives me the chance to explain myself, and it gives her the chance to suprise people when we're at the range and she points out and explains the 3 safeties on a glock.

btw your finger is also a manuel safety. so you have your finger, then a trigger safety, then a drop safety, firing pin safety.. that makes 4 safeties, all of which are deactivated FASTER then manuel safeties. just a thought, you have to move your thumb to deactivate thumb safeties, on a glock, you just have to pull the trigger.

The XD is a fine gun.
But please don't equate an extenal safety to "fumbling with one in the "heat of battle". With just a little practice, you can master the fine art of using your thumb on the draw to take "off safe", and present your weapon with absolutly no degradation in time to present.

I have a Glock 23 and an xD 9mm [ported for that extra bang]. I don't think either of them is more dangerous than the other. No external safeties, except my Glock has the ILS lock with the key. Of course, so far, I regret spend the extra 25 bucks for the ILS system that I never use. No safety is completely 100% though, right? My clock has the drop safety, firing pin safety, AND trigger safety. Does it get any more safe than that when we're talking about firearms? My xD has a couple safeties built in too, even that safety on the back of the grip that your hand has to be pressing for the weapon to successfully fire.

The only thing good about that external safety is that it makes you feel a little safer while carrying a chambered round.. and if something were to happen [store robbery or similar], they won't hear you back there racking back the slide to chamber a round.. all you have to do is flip a switch or old-style, push a button.

I don't see the trigger [and trigger safety] both being simultaneously and magically pressed while they are holstered or on my waist. Never is the trigger loose in my holster where something can pull it with the x number of pounds of pressure required. Yeah, I think most of those accidents occur when the weapon is being holstered, much rather than when it is already in carry.

I holster my weapon carefully, and as I have always learnt, never put a finger in the trigger guard, or touch the trigger, until you are aimed and ready to fire at something you are willing to destroy.

I beg to differ, your Glock does have an external safety. It's on the trigger. Fortunately, my wife loves and shoots my Glock 19. If you could get her to practice shooting your Glock on a regular basis she would probably become comfortable with the design.
