Just a heads-up for you guys on this Monarch 7.63x39. I ran some through my SKS last night along with some S&B brass case FMJ and some Wolf Military Classic FMJ. The Monarch has a very strong ammonia smell-much different from the Wolf Military Classic-it stinks too,but didn't have an ammonia smell to it. The S&B was very clean with no odd smells. I would treat this ammo as having a corrosive primer and clean accordingly after shooting.

The guy behind the counter told me it was not corrosive. I noticed the box did not say anything about being corrosive or not corrosive.

What special things do you have to do to clean an SKS after shooting corrosive ammo? Do you have to clean the gas system?

I looked all over the boxes and saw nothing noting it was non corrosive. One can only assume for the benefit of their equipment that this ammo is corrosive and clean accordingly. I did tear mine down completely last night to clean all of it. Gas system and all. I started with some windex soaked patches and then made some passes with Hoppe's #9 and finished with a light coating of Hoppe's oil to keep the rust monster away.

The Monarch that Academy sells is made at the Russian Barnaul Plant which does not use corrosive primers.

I'm not sure about the smell being described but it's definitely, 100% non-corrosive.

A little ironic that the ammonia smell causes you to think it corrosive, when the cleaning procedure for corrosive ammo involves diluted ammonia solution. (Why the Windex is a good option.)

I wouldn't shoot any 7.62x52mm ammo in my .308/7.62 NATO chambered rifles if I were you. The NATO round is 7.62x51. Things might get a little dicey if you do.

Yeah, that does seem ironic...but this ammo smells nothing like any other I've ever shot in any gun of any caliber. Just makes me cautious when the manufacturer doesn't clearly state whether it's corrosive or not on the packaging when others like Wolf make it very clear on their packaging.
I learned a long time ago not to assume anything-especially with foreign manufactured goods.

I will say that compared to the Wolf Military Classic, this Monarch ammo is much more accurate-almost as good as the expensive S&B brass cased ammo. The Wolf would barely keep an 8" group at 50 yards, and the Monarch grouped 2 loads of 10 rounds within 6". The best the S&B would group was just over 4". At 25 yards, the S&B and the Monarch were both within 2",and the Wolf was around 3.5".

There must be someone that lurks these boards and works for Academy. If so, Please bring back the cheap ammo! Of course, these days, the 4.89 they charge for 20 rounds is looking pretty good considering I ordered 1000 rounds of Wolf hollow point from Ammoman on 17NOV for $249 and it wont be here till 1DEC. I check the UPS tracker each day, and its been sitting at UPS in Horsham, Pa since 22NOV. At least the shipping is free. Saved a whole $5 compared to Academy. Luckily, I dont have a pressing need for it.

I just wanted some HP for hogs, or I would have bought it at Academy.

I hear tell that Dicks Sporting Goods is having a half off sale on ammo Friday. I wish they had a store in Houston. Closest one to us is in Austin. Could be worth the trip though.

I started searching for some more 7.62x39 when I heard about this last $50 jump that surprised most.

I found the Wolf Classic HP still unchanged at Sportsmans Guide when everything else Wolf had already increased.

So back on 11/12, I ordered 2000 at $185.22/1000.

Sure it's on backorder currently showing to ship 1/12/09. I may receive several more delayed notices. But as long as you are careful to reply to every notice they send you asking if you want to cancel, they will keep the order open and honor the price. They were shipping me Wolf for $121/1000 months later after it had gone up past $160.

The stock number I ordered was then removed from their web site.

What stock number was it, and can we still order it at that price?

The stock number is WX2-107300, but it just says, "Sorry, item is sold out"

http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/cb/cb.aspx?a=295994" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

When I said the item was removed from their web site, I should have said that it no longer appeared in their list of available 7.62x39 ammo.
