I went to the gathering @ Reunion arena today. Seemed to me that there were more cops and "well heeled" dignitaries there than people ridding themselves of "evil firearms". I saw a bunch of junk zinc alloy pistols and a few shotguns. Pretty much a joke if you ask me. I even took with me a Jenning J-22 that is a fun range toy just in case I wanted to feel all warm and fuzzy. I watched for a bit and talked to a photographer about what he had seen and he told me that there was a group trying to buy guns as they came into the parking lot. I got there just as they were escorted off the premises. They had people pointing people that were there to get there Kroger card into a small parking lot and asked them if they had a gun to turn in, if they did he would signal to a DPD officer that there was a weapon in vehicle and cop would escort them inside. No chance to make a cash bid!!

No, but I suppose that after buying groceries with my Kroger gift certificates or whatever, I could use the money I saved to go by ammo.

Every time I see something like this, I wonder what there definition of a gun is. For example, if I were to carve a gun out of some of the firewood that Ike made out of my oak tree out back, could I trade it in?

You should be able to. it would fake out TSA..

Only if you made the gun out of pine or another soft wood, oak shows up pretty good on the x-ray.

Dallas said they collected 147 guns. Reading the new articles, most people who traded them in were average citizens who didn't use them anymore.

Just so you know, if I have the process right, the state does this with both seized and surplus weapons. We are replacing our old S&W 4043's and I just found out how this works (I think I understand it). We first have to post them for sale to other agencies for 10 days. The state has a surplus property sight that other governmental agencies can purchase stuff for. On this we get to post a price for them. For the 4043's I think it will be $250. Sometimes small municipal agencies will look for the old weapons. If we do sell them this way, the agency gets the money back into our budget.

If they do not sell there, we send them to the state property disposal office. They will auction them off to anyone via gunbroker.com. Price is whatever they can get (again, I think). If we do this, the agency gets a small percentage of the money but most goes back into the general fund for the state.

Anyway, I think there will be a group of about 75 S&W 4043's placed on gunbroker.com by the state in April or May. I am also asking to get rid of some of the seized guns in the training inventory that we do not need any more. Most of them are useless, but there are a couple in decent shape.

I went to the Gun Buy Back at Reunion on Saturday. I was hoping to get a good deal. When I pulled up, a cop approached my car and asked what I was selling. I told him I wanted to buy someone's gun before they sold it for a Kroger card. The cop said I could not do it. He said there is a Dallas ordinance that makes buying (but not selling) a gun inside downtown Dallas illegal. First, that made no sense. How can buying be illegal, but selling is not? I very politely disagreed with the officer and told him I would try my luck. He then told me that he would give me a ticket for trespassing if I tried to buy anything. I asked if I could just receive the ticket, but then continue going on with my business. He told me if I did that, he would have to arrest me. I asked the cop if he thought that was right. He responded that his job is not to interpret the "right/wrong" of a law. It's to enforce it. I agreed not to try and buy a gun since I prefer not to spend a day in jail. The cop allowed me to go inside. There were actually some nice guns inside. I was completely surprised by some of the weapons being sold for $50.

Here's my question. Does anyone know about this law that says you cannot buy a gun inside Downtown Dallas? I looked through all of Dallas' city ordinances and cannot find such a thing. Please let me know if you think I could have actually gone to jail. If I did get arrested, would they have anything to hold me on? My personal opinion is that this is a bunch of crap.

IANAL, but I am sure the cop was wrong. If that was the case, then you couldn't buy a gun at the Market Hall Gun Show form an individual, and I know it is done all the time at the shows, including by police officers. He was feeding you a line of garbage to get you to leave.

It seems to me that if there was such a law, he wouldn't have threatened you instead with a charge of tresspassing.

What you observed was a violation of "failure to obey LE", which never ends well.

My curiosity is getting the better of me. What were some of the "nicer" guns being turned in? It probably will make me crazy, but I just have to know.
