Shooting Air Rifle in NTX

#1

Post by Beiruty »

I live in Allen, Mckinney area. I acquired a new air rifle, a Gamo Whisper Deluxe. I would like to shoot in the open somewhere in Collin County.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,

I always shot my air rifle in the back yard when I was a kiddo (not too long ago). What are you looking for in particular? 50 yards? moving targets? coke cans? small cats? (kidding)

There is an outdoor shooting range near Tom Bean which is just north of McKinney and east of Howe.

GPS Coordinates:
Deg/Min.MM Deg/Min.MMM Deg/Min/Sec Deg.DDDDD
Lat 33°31.16 N 33°31.163 N 33°31’10 N 33.51938 N
Lon -096° 29.86 W -096° 29.865 W -096° 29’52 W -096.49775 W

It is an honor system range and you pay 3.00 in a slot there. Usually no one there.

1. Head North on US 75 until you reach exit 53 in Howe, TX
2. Take exit 53 and stay on service road until you reach Spur 381.
3. Turn right on Spur 381.
4. Turn left on SH 5.
5. Turn right on FM 902. Stay on FM 902 out of Howe.
6. Continue on FM 902 until you reach the range at FM 902 and Job Bob Rd in Tom
Bean.

You will see a big Bus at the range area. That way you know you are in the right place. Take your own targets with you and clean up after yourself.

AEA:

You were quite informative on this range where Beiruty can shoot
his air rifle.

Can anyone take real pistols/revolvers/rifles/shotguns out there and
shoot real ammo for $3?

What are the available days and hours?

Is the bus a target, or where the owners live?? -:)
N. Texas LTC's hold 3 breakfasts each month. All are 800 AM. OC is fine.
2nd Saturdays: Rudy's BBQ, N. Dallas Pkwy, N.bound, N. of Main St., Frisco.
3rd Saturdays: Golden Corral, 465 E. I-20, Collins St exit, Arlington.
4th Saturdays: Sunny St. Cafe, off I-20, Exit 415, Mikus Rd, Willow Park.

I have not been there but it is a real shooting range for real guns and ammo. Yes, you can shoot there for $3.00. I suggested it to Beiruty because it is the closest place from his location I could think of that he could go to shoot his air rifle with no problems. He obviously is stuck in a City and has no place to shoot.

The available days/hours are any day during daylight hours. It is a low area and sometimes it could be muddy after hard and sustained rains.
EDIT: After thinking about it, when I spoke to Mr. Williams, I believe he told me that the area was grown up and he could not get in there to mow because of a long period of rain we had at that time. So, it may not actually be a "Low" area as I described originally......

I understand the bus is some sort of icon but it is not a target or a place of habitation.

It is known as the Ralph Williams Shooting Range. If you PM me your email address, I will send you a PDF File I made that includes a satellite image of the place. The file is too large to post here at 336kb.

If either of you two, or anyone else goes there to shoot, I would appreciate it if you would post a review of your experience there. I have not been there and would like to know what it is like.

I am about 40 miles away myself, but am planning to go out there someday when my Son comes to visit again. I would go sooner if I had someone to go with, which I don't. I need to sight in an AR15 and a Marlin 1894C. If anyone is interested in meeting me out there someday and wants to help me sight in these two rifles, just give me a shout!

AEA:

Thanks for the additional information.

I don't need a satellite photo, although thanks for the offer.

When I have some time in a day or two, I will send you a PM.

" Shoot " me with whatever information you have of this location.
I am located just east of McKinney... I can throw a stone at 380 from my front door.

I'll be more than glad to run up there and see what's going on.

I've been depressed sine the day I moved way out here, and then they closed the Collin County Gun Range.

Very interesting.
My son is in town and I have a few firearms to test or sight in also.
We may have to run up there one day this week.
