Ruined an IWB holster today.

I was off today and the weather was nice, so I decided to do my monthly Range time out back on the property. I carry a PT840 for EDC and brought one of my cheap Uncle Mikes IWB holster out for the plinking fun.

All was going well and I was having a good time, when I decided to work on my point shooting skills. I learned how to point shoot while in the military and still practice it quite a bit just in case i ever find myself in a tight spot where time is life. I had two targets set up at 20 paces and was facing away from the targets and drawing as I turned in on them.

I was on my forth quick draw of tapping two into each target, when I drew and fired, but noticed that something black had flown through the air and fell about 15 paces in front of me. I looked down to realize that my IWB holster had come unclipped from my belt and been drawn with my weapon; the fact I was point shooting and not using the sights, I didn't notice the gun still holstered and fired off two rounds.

The rounds blew out the bottom of the holster and continued on to the target. I couldn't believe what I had just done and thinking about it, I believe it's time to look for a better IWB holster. I have a Black Hawk Tactical Holster that is OWB and works well for winter time carry, but isn't great for hiding a PT840 in the summer time.

You guys have any suggestions for a good IWB holster for the PT840?

Very interesting and, yeah, a little funny. However, I'm also wondering about the safety of a holster that will allow the gun to be fired while holstered. None of my holsters will allow this.

C-dub, the holster does cover the trigger and safety when the weapon is holstered; the only thing I can figure is the weapon caught on the inside material as I drew, though it's clear the weapon came out far enough for me to swipe the safety off and get on the trigger as I drew. Like I said, time for an IWB upgrade.

That is the main reason I don't like IWB's with clips, pulling the holster with the gun. Some paddle style holsters will do the same thing - - - check your gear.

Another recommendation for the Crossbreed SuperTuck. You won't have any problem with it coming out with the gun while drawing. Their belts are nice too if you need a good gunbelt. I got the velcro clip option to go with the holster and am very pleased with it.

one of the reasons I like my infidel holster is that when drawing I can apply pressure to the top of the holster and pop my gun out.

I carry my gun holstered 100% of the time and while its outside of my pants with just a push of my thumb the holster flies away. idk if its the correct way to do things but it works quickly and safely for me.

I had an experience very similar to John L's a number of years ago on a bank robbery call. (I think the holster was an Uncle Mike's as well.) Fortunately the situation didn't call for discharging the weapon, but seeing it come out with the gun was a sobering experience. It didn't take a lot of imagination to realize that this could be the start of a really bad day.

Since that incident I've never carried a holster with a device that doesn't positively fasten the holster to the belt in a way that makes sure it can't come out on the draw. I favor full belt loops for that reason, but the type of clip used on the Comp-Tac Infidel and some types of J clips have also proven themselves worthy over time.

Placed my order this morning for a crossbreed supertuck deluxe with the combat cut. Hopefully I have killed my last paper target while shooting through a holster.

Seriously, I mean it - the time to find out about an equipment deficiency is on the range, as you did . . . NOT when defending yourself against one or more bad guys.

Can't recommend something for the PT840 specifically, but my 1911 & BHP ride in a Milt Sparks Versa-Max II when I carry them, and for my Glock I use a Comp Tac CTAC.
