Walther P99?
Seeking comments from P99 owners, particularly 9mm. Are you satisfied with this pistol? Any negatives? Comments on the variants?
After giving my P228 to my son in a moment of weakness, I need a hi-cap 9mm to replace it. I don't grok glock. I like HKs but ruled out the USP.
TIA for your feedback.

Re: Walther P99?
Had P99 in .40 and really liked it. My only issue was the little bump on the inside of the trigger guard. After about 50 rounds i would get a sore spot on the underside of my trigger finger. Other than that it was very reliable, easy to shoot, and i really liked the decocker and red dot indicator.
I have since sold it and replaced it with a Spingfield XDm 9 mm and have been extremely happy with it.

Re: Walther P99?
I have a first generation P99 in .40cal that I bought back in 2002. I have added night sights to it but other than that nothing else accept keep it cleaned. I love it, have tried some other but always got rid of them and kept the P99.

Re: Walther P99?
I have the latest generation p99 in .40 cal with the AS trigger. The trigger is great in SA mode, very light and short for follow up shots. When decocked into DA mode, it has a longer, heavier pull which I feel is safer for carry (although I couldn't say for sure as I am still waiting on my plastic). The gun shoots very accurate and is very comfortable. I have about 800-900 rounds through it without problem and feel the only downside is the cost and availability of the gun and accessories (I actually wanted 9mm, but couldn't find one anywhere at the time). I can see someone choosing glock on capacity and price when you compare the two, but this is a very well made, well designed pistol IMHO, so it's worth the extra $$. OF course, you'd spend more on a HK or Sig anyway.
Also, the newer models don't have the same bump on the trigger guard as the old ones. They also have improved triggers I think.
I haven't tried the QA trigger but I really like the AS version for the option of DA/SA. I really like the compact version for better carry.
Takedown for cleaning is super easy very similar to a glock as well.
Hope this helps. I'd let anyone try mine at the range in Houston if they wanted.

Have the one i got in 2004 still in .40 and it is the most reliable as well as my favorite gun in the collection. Never had any and i mean any issues with it. Only downside is extra mags are EX-PEN-SIVE!!!

Re: Walther P99?
I shot IDPA for a while, and a number of P99s showed up . . . and, gradually, went away. Reliability problems.
Spoke to one guy about it, and he said that after about 150-200 rounds without cleaning, he started getting malfunctions with WWB. (He switched back to a BHP.)
Some guys really like 'em . . . but there seems to be a higher than normal percentage of clunkers out there.

Re: Walther P99?
I had a P99 DAO in .40
It had a really great trigger, and was pretty nice to shoot. It also felt great in the hand, with adjustable backstrap; it even had a front sight that you could change out. It came with 3 diff height sights from the factory. I used the middle option in both cases.
The only problem I had with mine was when the mag was full, it was hard to insert fully, and in that same situation, it would not always go fully into battery. But it's a great range gun.

Re: Walther P99?
I have several Walther P99s, in both 9 and 40. One of my 9mm 99s is an early Interarms import and has been used in IDPA for several years. I have probably shot at least 10,000 rounds through it. Has been very reliable. Like other pistols if you don't clean it (after many rounds) carbon can build up on the feed ramp/chamber area and cause failure to go into battery. My 40 has experienced a case head seperation and the only damage was the extractor blew out and had to send back to Walther to get replaced. Recoil on the 40 is sharp.
As stated, quality (factory) magazines are expensive, but Midway has them on sale occasionally, just have to keep an eye out. Stay away from promags for the Walther. S&W99 magazines are made by Mecgar (this is the factory mag).
