Thinking about a new carry gun. Suggestions?

#1

Post by BradA »

Im carring a XD9 that I have had for years. Thinking about something different now. I like the XDM but it is a little bigger than my XD. Also would like to go back to a 45 or maybe try a 40(dont have a 40 yet) I have been thinking about either a compact M&P or a 3" 1911. Please dont suggest a Glock. I know everyone loves them, but I cant stand them for some reason. Whats everyones opinion on the M&P or a smaller 1911? Or maybe something that I have not listed or looked at.

HK P2000SK in .40S&W, or if you want bigger go with the full size P2000.

I have the M&P 9c and love it. I tried a Glock and didn't like the feel in my hand - sorry glock fans.

I am wanting to get full-size M&P, probably another 9mm so that I can carry either in my current IWB or OWB holsters and interchange the magazines.

I may be biased because this is the only pistol I have at the moment :cryin

You don't see one listed in my inventory - Coyote Ugly - I'd have to chew my hand off if I caught myself holding one. "rlol" :smilelol5:

Seriously - I'd sugesst something in the Kimber Ultra Carry II family or Colt Defender or something along that line. As you can tell I gravitate toward 1911's. :fire

Check out Kahr pistols, definately worth a look. The PM series makes a nice small carry pistol.

The most reliable handgun I have in inventory is a Rock Island Armory (RIA) compact 1911. It is also accurate enough that most people think it has match grade components. Some guns feel good, some guns shoot good, some guns work good. My little compact 1911 does all three and replaces the word "good" with the words "Extremely Well". Now just to be fair I did order a Kimber Custom TLE II a few hours ago anticipating it entering my carry rotation.

I had a Cold Defender in the safe. But It will sometimes lock open with two or three rounds left in the mag. I have had several gunsmiths look at it and neither can figure out what is wrong with it. Have changed springs, mags, and shot almost every factory load I can find. Sometimes it does it sometimes it dosent. Im leaning toward a Springfield Loaded Micro-Compact. 45 w/ 3" like colt defender. Trust my other two Springfields with my life, dont see why I couldnt trust a third Springfield.

Ones to consider:
- Kimber Ultra Carry 1911 .45 ACP
- Sig Sauer P229 .40
- Smith & Wesson M&P .40 subcompact

Nothing against Kimber. But to me there is not much difference other than price compared to a high end Springfield.

BradA,

I know what you are saying!

I have M&Ps. I shoot the standard I shoot for IDPA and a 9c I carry frequently and use in IDPA for BUG matches. I have no issues or complaints with either. Either the 9 or the 40 will be a good choice.

If you are interested in a M&P40c drop me a PM.

As to 1911 3" come to the Conroe Gun Show this weekend and give a good look at STI. STI has some awesome carry guns. SRVA and I will be at the Cypress FireArms table.

1911 1911 1911 1911 1911 1911 1911 1911 1911 1911 1911 1911 1911 !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thats my thoughts anyway. I love my 1911, its a Gov though. My wife has the M&P .40c and its a great gun. No complaints. Feels great, shoots great. I am just partial to 1911s. I think that they are one of the best guns out there. They conceal great are trustworthy and have been battle proven.

Its hard to argue that there is anythign better than a 1911. It had stood the test of time and how many different combat situations. Sure some have limited problems but no weapon is 100% perfect 100% of the time. But after almost 100 years nothing even comes close to a 1911 IMHO other than maybe a Hi-Power.

I just bought a Kahr CW40 that I can carry in my pocket. Weighs 16 ozs empty. I've been shooting 180 grain Hornady XTP with no problems and was pleased with the amount of recoil and it's accuracy.
