I would love to find a 1911 in 9mm but they seem to be hard to find.
I do think that a true 1911 is a .45 but shooting it is about 3x cost per round over a 9mm.
Kimber's

Springfield's

STI has some as well:

Taurus is scheduled to launch a 1911 9mm next year.

Not sure why but I just can't get excited about a Taurus.

I think they are quality and a coworker swears by his 1911 .45 Taurus.

By the way, that's not a poke at Taurus' firearms - just their support.
That may be true. However, my experience is as follows:

Kimber - 1 trip back

Springfields (2) both new -#1 Springfield refused to take it back, said it would probably get better with use. Spent over $400 to make it reliable.
#2 - 2 trips back

Taurus (4) - no malfunctions ever, thus no need for customer service

May I ask what model Springfields you have?

Thanks

The first Springfield was bought in the '90's, a stainless loaded 5". After running several hundred rounds through it and still having problems, they wanted me to keep shooting it so see if it would get better. Instead I had Teddy Jacobsen do an action job.

Another Springfield, bought in 2002, was a 4" Champion. Service was much better this time, and the 2nd trip was only because they overlooked one of the issues I had doumented on the first trip. They proofed it this time by firing an unbelievale amount of ammo, over 200 rounds of various JHP.

There were three blued PT1911s and one stainless, all 5", with nary a hiccup.

BTW, the Kimber was an Eclipse Pro II.

Sounds like I need to rethink Taurus. Replace the plastic grips with a better quality wood or Hogue product.

I need the dual thumb safety seeing that I'm a lefty.

A good friend of mine also has a Rock Island Armory and he loves it.

I really appreciate all of your input on 1911's. Hubby is wanting one badly and looking for the best bang for his buck (no pun intended). Please keep sharing the info!

Best bang for the buck to me as a starter would be the Rock Island. Basic pistol, reliable, can be upgraded later and cost under $400 new if you shop around.
