I'd have to disagree. You can find a good SKS, I prefer Norinco, for cheap. Yes, there are some crazies asking 500 or 600 for one, but unless its a sporter, they are cheap. At the height of the Obama craze, I found one at a gun show for 200 out the door, FTF transaction. It is signifigantly more accurate than any AK I've ever shot.

Given the prices on SKS rifles, I am not sure it is worth it to settle for it when an AK is just a little more money. If you find a good deal though, go for it.

I have a Vepr K and and while I can't do really tight groups, it will shoot 5" groups or so all day long with just about any ammo. I don't really call that inaccurate. It is plenty accurate for what the rifle was built for. I've played around with a 300 yard gong and can hit it, though not consistently.

If you want something to shoot 1/2" groups, an AK is not what you are looking for.

Do some research on the vz58 first (the D-techniks one, not the Century build). I have two - very accurate, lighter than an AK and a very, very, nicely built rifle. If you are looking for an AK-style carbine, they are superb.

Either CDNN or century has it on sale, for a very nice price. Milled, and durable. But heavy.

Depending on the country, ammo, and familiarity/use AK's can and are acceptable at 300yrd. I use my Tabuk all the time now for hogs and love it the 7.62x39 dispatches the hog with prejudice. I just Built a PSL cut the barrel to 18.5 11 degree target crown with a adjustable gas block will run a 8x42 posp as well man this thing is a beast to shoot.

I would recommend a AK74 with 5.45x39 a 6x24 posp and lots of cheap ammo.

Mak-90 is my hands down favorite, but my thumb hole stock is ugly. I do love a Bulgarian 74 as well. Much less impressed by yugo, and don't care for Romanians at all.

My experience. I've never shot an AK, but I have a Chinese Paratrooper model SKS with a cheapie scope that I set up as a backup hunting rifle. It's been several years but the best I shot was a 5 shot 1.5" group at 100 yards. I was literally blown away! No, it's not for sale LOL!

The paratrooper, AKA "sporter" is the most desirable SKS, and something I really want to acquire one day.

I have about all of the above you mentioned except the Chines rifle I have zero CHICOM AK in my inventory. I really feel that they are all good rifles (WASR not so much) but a Romy G or Romy 64, Romy AKM, or a AIMS they are very good rifles.
I think the trick is to find the rite ammo and then poof theres the accuracy. The ammo manufactures were so different and quality control varied so much that the ammo in one rifle to another will give you a big group difference.

Not much disagreement there. A $200 SKS is a great deal these days. With limited funds, that would be my choice.

The Yugo SKS I have isn't any more accurate than my Vepr K. However, I think my Vepr is more accurate than average and likely my Yugo is worse.

I've heard a lot of people comment on super inaccurate AK's, but I haven't shot one. I have them in 7.62X39, 223, and 5.45 and all are about the same (2" to 5"). The 223 and 5.45 have more accuracy potential I think, but the sights are a handicap.

My Chinese SKS is a Norinco Paratrooper. Not that accurate and not that reliable.

The "Official Soviet AKM Manual" originally published by the Ministry of Defense of the USSR states that "normal" performance with an AK-47 is 4 shots (or three with a flyer) within a 15 cm circle at 100 m. That equates to a 5.4" group at 100 yards or just over 5 MOA. The shooting is done prone with a rest. I haven't shot my AK yet but if it meets the above standard, then I will be happy with it.

I don't understand. I must just be lucky. My Chinese AK shoots a lot tighter than that and I'm kinda lousy with open sights.
