Purplehood beat me to it, but I gotta wonder why this is being held "on campus" where carry is restricted. I'd like to hear the guy speak, but won't be venturing into the gun-free zone to do so.

Unfortunately that will be the case. Sorry guys. If you think that's bad, imagine being a full-time college student with a CHL being unable to carry on almost a daily basis.austinrealtor wrote:Purplehood beat me to it, but I gotta wonder why this is being held "on campus" where carry is restricted. yep, four years of it for me too (actually, five, but I lost some credits in transfer, and changed majors, and really no one actually graduates in four years and .... )

Truly, IMHO, a bone head move in the organizers part.Codename46 wrote:Unfortunately that will be the case. Sorry guys. I applaud the work required (and likely cost) to get this speaker to an engagement with the intended audience. But the choice of venue that automatically alienates a major part of the demographics you want to attract seems misguided.
If holding this event in a location that specifically forbids the right to carry a concealed weapon was a planned , calculated part of the mission statement.. Then, well.. I guess you got what you wanted.. I truly hope you get the audience you wanted and folks benefit from the speaking engagement.
Though I was interested in coming up for this when I first read the thread.. Due to location of the venue, I’ll pass.

Maybe if a few of the UT football players had been carrying they could've stopped UCLA from scoring (sorry, couldn't resist)

I respectfully disagree with your assessment.bronco78 wrote:Truly, IMHO, a bone head move in the organizers part.Codename46 wrote:Unfortunately that will be the case. Sorry guys. There are very limited options in terms of venue location that is within walking distance from the UT campus, can accommodate approximately 100 people, and won't cost an arm and a leg to reserve (an "arm and a leg" in this case would be anything more than $50 since, as a grassroots organization, we get next to no funding). Why should it be held within walking distance? Because most of the students who live on campus don't have a car, and we wouldn't be allowed to advertise the event on any UT calendar if it is held at an off-campus location. We chose this location for logistical reasons.

The decision to hold the event in venue that goes against the very thing you are trying to bring to social attention seems contrary to good sense, but if the choice was there or nowhere........ I guess I can see the compromise.Codename46 wrote:

My assessment was valid, opinionated, and seems to be on track with what you did.Codename46 wrote: There are very limited options in terms of venue location that is within walking distance from the UT campus, can accommodate approximately 100 people, and won't cost an arm and a leg to reserve (an "arm and a leg" in this case would be anything more than $50 since, as a grassroots organization, we get next to no funding). It's a choice you made; I truly hope it works out for you. Great effort for a good causeIf holding this event in a location that specifically forbids the right to carry a concealed weapon was a planned, calculated part of the mission statement..
Best of luck.. I truly hope you have great success and fill the venue to capacity.

I would go, but it seems limited to just UT students and staff.

Could I get confirmation? Is this ONLY for students and faculty or can non-students go as well? I think I could make an exception and go to a non-carry area for this good cause.

It's John Lott speaking. I'd go even if he was speaking at the Brady Campaign Headquarters building (so long as I didn't have to give those clowns money)Matt78665 wrote:Could I get confirmation? I think it is great that the talk is being held in a "gun free zone". The college is allowing the event. This is another step in the right direction. More and more colleges are allowing more and more gun related activities such as the classroom portion of the CHL class and gun clubs. The more the message is heard on campus the more support generated for Campus Carry.

The event is open to everyone. The School of Law is being bureaucratic and have been throughout the process. We will also be selling Students for Concealed Carry on Campus t-shirts for $10. Also there will be pizza.
Thanks everyone for their support.

We hosted a CHL class on campus last semester and had 60 students and faculty members take the class. We are going to do it again next spring right when the Legislative session opens. If anyone has taken a class with a CHL Instructor named Michael Cargill, please thank him for all the support he's given us.CompVest wrote:I think it is great that the talk is being held in a "gun free zone".
