Build a 1911?

Yep, generally have butchered sears, hammers, barrels with no feet (false lockup), or poorly fitted beavertails. As long as the big parts are good we can fix the rest. Recently bought a 6" HS trophy match that was using a full length guide rod to hide the fact that the rails were too narrow for the slide. rattled like an old GI model when the guide rod was pulled. Have to peen the rails to get it close to right.

I figure as long as the frame and slide are intact, everything else can be fixed pretty easily.

If the slide's a goner, well...if it's a good enough price, we call it a "Donor."

If the frame's not ruined in some way, everything else is fixable...some just take more "fixing" than others.

I highly recommend doing what I did. I bought a inexpensive mil-spec 1911 and added the parts I wanted.

That *did* come out quite nicely!

Yes, it's is pretty cool. Pricey but you walk away with a quality gun it looks like. Plus I assume after the class you could duplicate what you did again and again. I took a look at Fusion Fire Arms site and sent and email and they seemed very receptive and helpful. It seems you can get pretty much everything you need from them to build a nice 1911.

As far as special tooling you can get away with general tools the only thing I suggest is a hard and medium Arkansas stone for cleaning up the sear and disconector. There are a couple of jigs that would make life alot easier but with some good old fashioned ingenuity you can figure it out. I do suggest upgrading one first so you can figure out what parts do what and figure out what's critical fit and what's not.
