+1 on the Browning Hi-Power. It is my daily carry. It also has the same manual of arms as the 1911, minus the grip safety. I have an FM-90 (MkII), produced by Argentina under license from FN Herstal. I use Mec-Gar (the OEM for the FN Hi-Power) 15-round flush-fit mags. Here's mine:

If you can track down a Hi-Power Practical, they can generally be had for around $800, and are supposed to be great carry guns. They include a commander hammer (similar to what you see on mine above), and several other improvements designed for its use as a carry gun. Bud's Gun Shop gets them in from time to time, though they look to be currently out of stock there. Here's what they look like:

I have a Kimber Pro Carry II 9mm and it's a solid shooter.

I'm saving for a Browning HP now.
