I was in Carter's today and asked them about the ad. Though not an exact quote the guy stated "Mr Carter is concerned about our youth with waistbands around their knees having a high capacity semi auto available". It's strictly his policy. Is he right or wrong I can't say. I do know I once denied selling a pistol to a guy who obviously got the shrt end of the stick in a fight. I gave him some bull about a waiting period for the $100 instant credit we had available and he was eligible. We stayed open to 9PM and he was in about ten-fifteen minutes to closing. Just after he left a woman called and said her husband had been beaten up and was coming in to buy a pistol. I told her he was gone with no weapon. Never saw him again.

This week's ad shows a SD shotgun with the same "Must be 21 years of age to purchase" caveat. I agree with the person that said the Government shouldn't force this on gun shops but it is their choice if THEY choose to implement them. While part of me disagrees with it, I think that's their prerogative and I can't say I disagree with Mr. Carter's logic. He would rather take the chance of missing out on some sales (and potentially turning a few customers off), then having some AR's and SD shotguns end up in some disgruntled 18 year old hands. Again, his choice...

Wait a minute. It seems the only criteria from Mr. Carter is a pistol grip...not high capacity magazines, as evidenced by the Mossberg for sale in this weeks ad. So is the policy because it's "evil" looking? Or he doesn't think an 18 year old is mature enough?

Again, I'm all for a business making their own policies. I have a problem when they are more restrictive when it comes to 2A matters.

What the salesman said was in reference to the ad for the AR. I pointed to the ad laying on the counter when I asked about it. He didn't say it was the only criteria which obviously it's not. The great thing about our country is he can refuse to sell to anybody for any reason, which, I'm sure you know and would agree with. The other great thing is you can let him know you disagree by not buying from him.

I've seen Academy restrict ARs to 21 and over too.

Once upon a time Carter's Country said they would not sell Glocks because they were "unsafe", but sold the S&W Sigma  .

Then one day I guess Bill Carter woke up and realized how much money they were losing and started selling Glocks.

I would buy an AR somewhere else instead of the Houston Gun Shows worst enemy.

Are you saying SW Sigma pistols are unsafe or just using them as comparison for DAO no external safety example?

I can't really speak to price difference between Carter's and other independent dealers. Gunshows are sort of hit and miss. I've seen some very good prices and some that are way too proud of their wares. Dealers such as Carter's offer the opportunity to deal with some one who probably has more knowledge and experience than a typical chain like Academy. One other thing , Academy uses WalMart tactics with their suppliers to adjust prices that leave lowered profits for the supplier so they can sell alittle cheaper. I deal with the devil at times when I have to, but I like to support the hometown boys, i.e. Carter's, Arms Room, Marksman, etc . I'm even willing to spend a few extra dollars to do business with a brick and mortar local who I know will be there when I have questions or problems.

Mr. pumaguy,

I am not saying S&W Sigmas are unsafe. I am saying that since Carter's was a full line S&W dealer, they would sell the Sigma, aka Glock & Wesson, but would not sell the Glock back in the day saying that Glocks were unsafe, when the Glock and the Sigma operate basically the same way.

The last time I shot a Sigma I literally had to put both index fingers on the trigger to get it to go bang.

Probably shouldn't beleaguer this post, but SW does have an extremely good warranty and I'm sure they could fix that. I acquired a couple of the earlier versions in 9mm and .40 SW through a deal and have shot both many times with no issues. The trigger pulls were by no means the greatest but I only needed one finger and I have weak hands due to RSD. I just remembered that my wife qualified her CHL with the 9mm.
