On Saturday, a .25 in my pocket beat hell out of the 9mm I left sitting on my desk at home.

Note that it was Starbucks coffee that was used as the improvised defensive weapon. ;-) Very fitting that Starbucks should get the honor, as they've been pretty good about not placing restrictions on guns (behind what the law in their various locations might already prohibit).

Then espresso is like a .50 cal, right?

Unless you wimpied it up with milk and turned it into a latte. Then it's just a .25.
