"Man Shot in Home Break-In
Last Update: Mar 24, 2007 10:48 PM

Posted By: Walker Robinson

A man caught breaking into an east side home was shot in the back by someone who lived there early Saturday, Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies told News 4 WOAI.

The homeowner caught the burglar close to 6 a.m. Saturday inside his home on Little Port Drive, authorities said. The two men began to fight.

The homeowner’s roommate woke up and fired a gun at the intruder, officials said. The man was hit in the back with pellets, deputies said.

The homeowner and roommate are not expected to face any charges, deputies said.

“It was in self-defense, Sgt. Chris Burchell with Bexar County Sheriff’s Office said of the shooting. “They also were protecting each other.

The intruder was recovering at Brooke Army Medical Center Saturday night. No word on his condition. "

Wish I knew more details, but the use of the word "pellets" in the story suggests birdshot was used . . .

I think I'll load at least 00 buck if I'm ever prepping a shotgun for home defense.

So does the fact that the robber is "recovering."

At typical indoor fighting distances the shot column does NOT expand very much so a load of birdshot is basically a 70 caliber frangible round and WILL kill if aimed properly. Now if the Goblin was wearing HEAVY (motorcycle leather grade) clothing there would be little to no penetration of the shot.

NO buckshot does NOT knock a goblin flying, simple law of physics for every action there is and equal and opposite reaction. does the shotgun knock the shooter flying?

Sorry if I sound preachy about this but it is one of my pet peeves.
Reasonable gun control is hitting your target with the first shot.

the shooter doesn't get knocked down because he is braced against the recoil. the intended target is not, and therefore would most certainly be knocked down, right?
I understand your thing about HollyWood flyin' across the room and what-have-ya. I was just sayin' the BuckShot woulda taken him for a ride, that's all.

now, would BuckShot penetrate a MotorCycle Grade Leather jacket? I've heard that a shotgun won't pop a car tire, but that seems asinine to me.
obviously I'm not a shotgun guy

:iagree: and less than a week ago I showed someone a shotgun pattern at 14 ft [ inside a room ] Cyl. bore, 24in. barrell, #9 AA's had a 4in. dense pattern with scattered shot to 51/2 in. A mod. choke would have been about half that.

Not nearly what most would think of a shotgun.

I don't know about penetration, I would think #4 to 00 would be good. but I'm not sure about bird shot.
I will check it out.

00 buck pellets weigh, according to this website, about 54 grains a pop (which is a moderately heavy .22LR bullet, interestingly). Let's say there's 10 of those suckers in the shell you're firing, which is 540 grains = 1.23 ounces = 0.077 pound mass (let's use pound mass to avoid the weight-as-force muddle that happens so often with the US Customary units). At 1200 fps, it's like emptying a Ruger 10/22's entire stock magazine into him all at once.
The Laws of Physics wrote:In an inelastic collision where all the mass of lead is literally absorbed by the poor sap on the business end of your scattergun of choice, it's a simple momentum conservation:

(Before) <shot> m1v1 + <Slim the Meth Addict> m2v2

(Equals) =

(After) <Slim the Meth Addict, new and improved with a Chewy Lead Center> m3v3

If Slim's meth habit has him cut down to 100 pounds and he is stationary at the time of the shot, v2=zero, and the "m2v2" product becomes zero. We know m3 = m2 + m1. So:

(Before) <shot> m1v1 (0.077 lbm)(1200 fps)

(Equals) =

(After) <Slim the Meth Addict, new and improved with a Chewy Lead Center> m3v3 (100.077 lbm)(v3)

Divide both sides by m3 to isolate the v3 term.

m1v1/m3 = v3

(0.077 lbm)(1200 fps)/(100.077 lbm) = 0.92 feet per second
If my calculations are correct, Slim's body will be accelerated to a speed of 0.92 feet per second, presumably backward with the shot (I am not bringing vectors into this, it's a safe assumption, and it's getting late.) This assumes, however, that this event takes place in outer space and there is no anchor--like Slim's stolen Nikes on terra firma--to counteract this sudden acceleration. It'd be best, scientifically speaking, to assume not, but I am not doing an impulse momentum calculation using Slim's fungus-encrusted feet as a pivot right now. He'll definitely be jolted back a bit, at least. Will he be knocked over? Well, maybe. He's a featherweight though, a guy with twice his mass would be accelerated only to half the speed. (Bear in mind I'm ignoring the massive wound trauma that would be inflicted by such a shot that would probably affect the target's ability to stand somewhat.)

Let us hope that none of us ever have to experiment with this. Nerd out.

I knew a guy long ago ;-) that witnessed high-brass 4s (jack rabbit loads) chopping a wood fence post off at the ground. And another guy, sober even, used 12 gauge and 6s to trim trees.

Depends; is it someone like my wife shooting a 3-1/2" magnum 18 pellet 00 load? (Can you tell I really like these critters? I wish every 12ga came in a 3-1/2" version.)

Heck, those things hurt me pretty bad if I don't get the tuck just right, and I've seen what they did to a heavy plate rack. Anybody that's not at least staggering backward after getting hit with that is one *seriously* bad dude.

I did use a few in my "ballistic deforestation" project a couple of weeks ago; they're almost as devastating as 2-3/4" slugs on trees, moreso in some cases because of the spread.

Ya'll just made me remember that back in the 70's a friend in Goldthwaite, Tx killed a deer with a 20gauge and #6 birdshot, very close range of course.
