After finding the guy who stole my truck selling the parts on craigslist - and Craigslist refusing to do anything about it
I decided that most people who use the anonymous services do it for a reason and Id rather not support that ...

BTW - he ended up getting arrested and charged for the crime of possession of stolen property - but no thanks to CL

I need to speak out on that one.

Everyone has the right to buy and sell guns unless they are a prohibited person (felon, etc.). I do not agree that someone must jump through the licensing hoops to be able to exercise their God-given Constitutional right to buy, sell, and possess arms.

The position you stated does not help restore firearms rights. It is one thing for a person to express they'd rather sell to a licensee, but being against all non-licensee transfers is objectionable.

I pass up a lot of gun buys because all their must have CHL or must sign Bill of Sale, etc. . . I personally do not want someone else to have my information. So they can keep their firearm and find a sucker somewhere else.
Okay, Im not trying to be confrontational or flippant but how is being careful who I am buying from or selling to something that should be avoided?
I am simply attempting to ensure I am not:
a. Selling to someone who is not authorized to own a firearm
b. Ensuring that if I sell to them and they use the weapon in a crime (by having a record of the sale) I am not investigated down to what underwear I buy or possibly implicated/charged in the crime until it can be hashed out
c. Minimizing the possibility of purchasing stolen property

As I said, I have bought person 2 person with only a handshake and some cash but, that is on their conscience to feel comfortable I am authorized and not a wack-a-doodle felon

On other boards I have seen other people who have the same sentiment as yourself...I just never had to opportunity to ask why.

Thanks... :tiphat:

c. Minimizing the possibility of purchasing stolen property
Well, I was going to simply let it drop, but since you ask, I'll chime back in.

My original reply to you was based on reading your statement ''Hey I'm all for public gun transfer but NOT without a CHL etc..." as stating you did not support anyone having the right to private, non-licensed transfers. If you personally are more comfortable with knowing your buyer, that is one thing, but making a generalized statement for all people is what I was objecting to. Do you see the distinction?

As far as your concerns, here is my view:

a. Selling to someone who is not authorized to own a firearm
I ask a buyer if they are in any way prohibited from possessing firearms, such a being a convicted felon, illegal immigrant, domestic violence, adjudicated mental defective, etc. I will accept their answer unless I have internal alarm bells ringing off the hook (I will still listen to my gut). That way, I have shown a good faith effort in complying with the law, and have a defense against being accused of negligently or recklessly selling to a prohibited person. It also protects me from some Nanny Bloomberg or Batfe sting.
If they lie to me, that is on them, not on me.

b. Ensuring that if I sell to them and they use the weapon in a crime (by having a record of the sale) I am not investigated down to what underwear I buy or possibly implicated/charged in the crime until it can be hashed out
I don't worry about this. I've read of numerous cases in national gun forums where this is discussed and there have been people who have been called by the BATFE trying to do a firearms trace. They simply said, "I sold that gun 5 months ago at a gun show. No, I have no idea who bought it." The firearms trace stops right there. No big deal. You don't get investigated down to your underwear or implicated in any crimes. Not a worry.

c. Minimizing the possibility of purchasing stolen property
I can understand this concern. But even if you have an ID from someone, that doesn't necessarily protect you anyway. Once a gun has been bought and sold a few times, no-one really knows its complete history.

One other action I will take is to show my Texas Driver License with my thumb over my name/address, but revealing enough to show my picture and the "Texas Driver License" at the top. That will reasonably demonstrate my Texas residency.

I will ask to see the same minimal evidence of state residency from the other party (thumb over the name/address), since it is a federal crime for me to buy or sell to a resident of a different state. I don't need to know who they are, I just need to know they are a Texan.

Son's best friend (24yo) robbed at gunpoint last month during Craig's list meetup in North Dallas. Middle of the day in front of In & Out Burgers 635 and Midway. Perp fired shot into side of truck to get his attention in midst of relieving him of 2 new Ipads. Hispanics in Dodge Charger, backed into parking space, rear license plate covered with cardboard (small "pre-incident indicators" ;-) ). Perp made enough other mistakes on that and a string of similar other robberies that PD got hot on his trail, at which point he offed himself ...

I ask to see a CHL when I sell, for my own piece of mind. But I don't "get your information" in the process. Well, not any more than someone gets your info when you say, "Hi, I'm Bob/Joe/Sue Smith/Jones/Doe, nice to meet you."

I absolutely support your right to decline the purchase if briefly showing your ID/CHL is exposing more information that you are comfortable with... but I think you might be going a little far when you imply that people who are willing to do so are suckers. A Bill of Sale is typically more intrusive, but once again, I wouldn't classify people who are willing to sign one as suckers

Not sure why so many see the tdl info as intrusive. It Is all public info and i can get it just using your license plate before you get out of the car. It is not a secret like your ssn. I make judgement call when meeting people for ftf sales but always note the license plate, phone they gave and name in my personal records.

we've used CL, I got a huge quilting machine, a small spinning wheel, one of my corgi's. the man has picked up several tools and even a great apple computer....

I think a couple of things to keep in mind....NEVER, EVER, NEVER go pick up something from someone by yourself, always have someone with you! If you can avoid it....don't go into the other person's house! We have pick up from the other person's house, but only once has anyone gone into the house, that was to get the computer and it was because it was raining cats, dogs and horses....this was several years ago. always go armed...just in case.

May be a bad choice of words, but someone who gives their information away knowingly are either "suckers" or "stupid." You have your right to your opinion so pick one for you. I have picked one for me.

By the way I do not submit to LEO searches on the side of road either because I am not a sucker or stupid. I enjoy my rights. :tiphat:

About a year ago a friend of mine was selling a used car. His asking price was $3000. He received a call from a lady who wanted to buy the car. She was a small business owner and wanted to pay cash rather than finance. He tried to get her to give him a cashier's check, but she still preferred cash.

My friend was a little bit nervous so he asked me if I would come over to his house during the transaction. In the meantime, he borrowed a pen from his bank that detected counterfeit bills. It told him that I felt a bit nervous, but I would witness the transaction. Fortunately everything went as planned.

The lady showed up with her son and bought the car. After the deal was done and the buyers left, my friend thanked me for my help. I told him "no problem, I came prepared". I smiled and reached in my pockets and pulled out my Sphinx-380 AT and Colt Detective Special. He is a "liberal type" so I didn't tell him before hand.

Do you follow the same rules as a seller and not require the buyer to show ID?

Yes I do. If they have a Texas LP and appear to have a like knowledge it is a deal.

If they drive up in a cab or riding a bus I am not selling

I also have a few other things I do and look for, but I want disclose. After being a State LEO for awhile and kids in law enforcement all the knowledge I can pick up helps.

Let me say this too. I don't do Craig's List.

I follow he same rules when traveling and etc... I avoid trouble to the best I my ability.

For those of you who just accept a TX drivers license and no CHL, might want to ask this fellow if he wishes he had:

http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/09/09/te ... d-illegal/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I won't sell without CHL, LEO Badge or BATF form. Do I limit my customers; sure. But I also can sell other guns later.
