Irritating editorial

I found this letter to the letter in the Abilene Reporter News and as soon as I have time to calm down which may take a couple of days I am going to have to send in a response with some very well chosen words about the facts. This guy couldn't be more wrong.

We must restrict the sale of handguns
Letter to the Editor
Friday, May 4, 2007

When are we going to say enough is enough? No country on earth allows the free access to guns that we do in America and look at the price we're paying in lives in order to preserve and protect our ''right to bear arms.'' Canada and European and Asian nations, without exception, have strict gun laws and infinitely fewer firearms deaths annually than the U.S.

Particularly hypocritical are those on the political right who adamantly (and justifiably) espouse the right to life in protecting the unborn, yet just as adamantly oppose any measures to restrict access to guns. Apparently life inside the womb is more precious than life outside?

Opponents of sensible gun laws dwell on prosecuting criminals. This is fine, but the carnage continues. We must do more. We're not solving the problem.

The majority of gun deaths are from handguns. Handguns are concealable. It's not that difficult to enter a school or business with a handgun.

Let's focus on handguns rather than hunting rifles and shotguns - legislation that will not restrict hunters.

One possible solution: restrict or disallow the sale of ammunition for handguns with the exception of law enforcement personnel. This would allow collectors of handguns to maintain their collections. Persons wishing to purchase handguns for personal protection within the home would be required to purchase ammunition (in very small quantities) from law enforcement agencies following background checks.

We need to persuade elected officials to take action and say no to the powerful lobbying of the National Rifle Association.

I wonder if this is the same Dennis Miller who is the "famous" comedian? Judging by his letter, it could be.

Don't think so. Dennis Miller (comedian) has a website, radio show, is often on T.V. and lives in California. I can't imagine he'd choose to write a letter to the editor in the Abilene Reporter News to get this message out. No offense to Abilene.

Not to mention Dennis Miller (the comedian) is a conservative and I'm pretty sure is pro-gun.

So, all of Europe has stricter gun laws?? Yup, Switzerland certainly does since it's mandated that men of age join the military and remain as reservists for a set period of time, during which they must keep their rifle and a certain amount of ammunition in their house at all times... that's certainly more strict than our laws (though I think I'd prefer their method), and from a neutral country to boot!

As for the other countries having few deaths... one of three things is true in every case:

1. They're a small country... of course they'll have few gun deaths if they're smaller

2. They have severely limited freedoms in general (not just as regards to the possession of firearms).

or

3. Due to the control of firearms, their violent deaths take the form of stabbings and beatings.

If I've learned on thing in life, it's that people who are committed to causing another harm, will do so regardless of what you do or do not allow them to have. If all they have is rocks, they'll kill their fellow man with rocks.

Anyways, my .02 in response to the stupid hippy liberals... they give us normal, well-adjusted liberals a bad name!

I've been to Abilene, and I'm not very convinced that his letter is the "common thought" in that area. Most of the people I've encountered there strike me as very pro2a, or at least more rural (stereotype, I know).

Yes sir, you are correct. I lived in Abilene for a little over 4 years and your assumption is correct. It is more of a rural environment (as rural as one can be in a city) and people are more laid back and down to earth. Mr. Miller is definitely not speaking for the majority there.

Nick, I see you're located in the Woodlands now? PM me and we'll throw some lead downrange sometime!

Come on guys, I was kidding (I knew I should have added one of these- ).

I didn't know he was a conservative, however. The last time I watched anything by him was in the late 80's/early 90's and he was definitely a liberal back then and had no problem bashing Conservative Republicans. When he went to HBO, I just refused to watch him (and still won't) because of the language he used.

If he's willing to take away our second ammendment rights, I wonder which other ones are of little use?

Keep in mind folks we are talking about the same town that arrested a man for smoking in his car. Taking away of someone rights is not above the locals in Abilene.

As for Mr. Miller's comments that banning handguns or the ammo to them is the solution. Just shows how clueless he is. If gun control works & prevents deaths/murders, then why does DC rank near the tops in murders? After 30 years of banning handguns, all that happen was some of the highest murders rates of any city. Several times ranking #1, as the murder capital of the US.

In 1976 pop was 702,000 with 188 murders
In 1986 pop was 626,000 with 194 murders
In 1996 pop was 543,000 with 397 murders
In 2005 pop was 550,521 with 195 murders

Yet Mayor Fenty still claims the handgun ban have helped to decrease gun violence??? Like they say you can't argue with an idiot.

He also never heard of reloading. The day such a bill was introduced in Congress, a billion shells would be picked up from ranges.
