Would you buy ..... ???

#1

Post by fortworthdude »

I have a CHL. My carry of choice is a Kahr PM9. There are times that I am going somewhere and know that I cannot take my weapon into that facility. I do not like to leave my PM9 in the car. I am thinking of going the cheapo route and buying a Jiminez JA9 as a 'kick around', 'who gives a rats' weapon that I can leave in the car on those occasions and still have a weapon with me if needed. Your thoughts please.

If you want a cheap weapon thats pretty dependable might want to check out the High-Point C9
Those use to cost around $150.00 ;-)

:iagree: I couldn't in all good conscience trust my life or the life of a loved one to a Jiminez. Buy a lockbox, and secure it. A stolen gun is still dangerous whether it is a $200 POJ or a $2500 Wilson Combat. :tiphat:

Do you trust it to defend your life? I wouldn't. For an inexpensive gun that's still reliable, I would get a used revolver or a cheap Makarov. If that's too expensive, a Hi-Point C-9 is heavy and ugly but I trust them a lot more than the Jimenez/Bryco/Jennings guns.

What about the SCCY CPX-2 as an option?

I'm all for keeping a cheap "beater" gun in the car, but I'll second what others have said: you should get a lockbox if you'll be leaving it unattended for extended periods of time. The other obvious complication is trying to balance cost and reliability. I've never shot a Hi-Point, but my experience with the Jimenez was less than satisfactory.

Not that you asked, but my recommendation is one of the Ruger P-Series pistols. I've found them to be reasonably accurate and completely reliable. A little bulky, but that's not a concern for a truck gun. Haven't priced them recently, but a couple of years ago you could easily find them in the $300 range.

Thanks to all that replied to my question. It is good to have a forum like this to bounce around ideas so as to build a strategy as to where I need to go. It is only on rare occasions that I am without my PM9 so it would only be a once in a while thing to need an in the car back up. Someone suggested today a 9mm or a 38sp Derringer which are two of the calibers I have on hand and shoot on a regular basis. Even though the derringers only have two shots they seem to have a pretty reliable track record and would be good for a close up encounter, which most situations are. I am not in a hurry and am still information gathering before making a decision. Thanks again for your input.

You can get a GunVault nano for about $30.00.

http://www.gunvault.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; for details. Available at Gander Mountain and other gun stores or at Amazon.com if you like buying on-line

It's a pretty good lock box for your vehicle.

As others have said, I would not leave any weapon unsecured in a vehicle (or anywhere else). That weapon falling into the wrong hands would be bad regardless of quality or price.

Why not a cheap 38 revolver? You can get a Rossi for under $300 and a taurus for $50 more and while they might not be a S&W I have all the confidence in any of them shooting when I pill the trigger.

Another vote for the lock box. Anything you leave in the car should be secured anyway.

Went to the store today and bought a combination lock box with a security cable for the car today. It is installed and under the seat and ready for whatever is left in there. Thanks for the input. I am still debating on what to buy but at least I am ready and secure.
