Let's talk about knives

So I know there is a 5.5 inch limit on knives, and come September 1 an auto/switchblade knife will be legal.

With that in mind, what kind of knives do you have/prefer for self defense purposes?

Self defense? None. Thats what all the thunder sticks are for...
If I need a knife I've already gone through 30 rounds of ammo, and frankly if the zombies are attacking its my fault for not uparmoring!
I do have a highly lethal (to the TSA) apple cutter Swiss Army knife. Greatest...tool....ever.

Hopefully the badguy/zombies are at least 21ft away from you. Within that distance a knife is a better defensive tool than a pistol.

You're funny. By the time you draw your knife you've been stabbed or shot.
I am very not worried about a robber with a knife. Its the hard lead objects coming at me I am worried about.

But hey, if you want a knife for that go for it. As noted I have my trusty Swiss Army knife. Plus it has scissors!

IMO, there is not much difference between the speed of an auto and an assisted opening. They both deploy very quickly, but the self assisted knives I have seen, also spring "IN" while closing...making the "accidental" deployment in your pocket much less likely, along with the fact that you must physically start the blade moving. Auto, well, a press of the button and it deploys in your pocket. Personally I would rather carry an assisted opening for pocket carry. I used to carry a Cold Steel Voyager at the Texas 5.5" limit for my EDC. A big heavy knife (non auto or assisted). I have recently switched to a "3.75" SOG Trident assisted opening. It is very light, carrys deep in your pocket, and is made of the same AUS8 steel. It has served every purpose that the voyager did, and then some. The smaller blade is much more funtional for every day use. That big blade was a bit cumbersome in some situatuations at work. I'm a field technician for a local phone company BTW. I use my EDC constantly. I have learned to prefer the 3.75" blade. Still, it has quick deployment, and is functional as a SD blade. Again, IMO.

True, but LEOs can carry those into places that many of us cannot.

I agree that the 5.5" cold steel knives are excellent for SD, and EDC. As I carried the cold steel voyager XL for years. My new supervisor had an issue with it. My employer has a strict "NO WEAPONS" policy. My new supervisor is an idiot that doesn't have a clue about Texas law. I think he's a "DEM" LOL! Instead of having to take the union route, yet again...I decided to go with a smaller blade, and settled on the SOG Trident. He doesn't know that it's "assisted opening". SHHHHHH! That makes it a "weapon".

I personally think being unconcerned about a robber with a knife is a mistake. Knives are cheap, plentiful, and can do horrendous damage. Considering that outside the home in urban areas a violent attack will likely be initiated at a distance of six feet or less, a knife in a bad guy's hands is a very real threat.

I agree. If the robber knows how to use it (and you should assume he does), it may be worse than a robber with a gun.

I think that statistically you are more likely to survive a gunshot wound from a handgun.

I just sold off a Benchmade Auto Axis. The Axis Lock is a GOOD lock, but I just don't care for it compared to a frame lock, liner lock, or a traditional lock back on a select few. I have heard that it is stronger than those, but I just couldn't get used to it. I carried a Kershaw Leek for years. Now I mainly carry ZT flippers. I've got a few others that I carry from time to time, depending on where I'm going & how I feel. I'm REALLY liking my Diskin Fire ;)

Youe mention liner locks, a simple joke I hope! Your Diskin Fire at a price of $600 is also a joke for folks on a budget. While I appreciate input, I'm not too sure that a $600 knife is what the folks here want to drool over. Thanks, but no thanks.

Not all liner locks are the same. Check out the ZT0350 in ZDP189 I'm selling: viewtopic.php?f=19&t=69070" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; There's a picture of the liner lock on it. That's a .075" liner on a .120" thick blade. The ZT0200 liner is the same thickness. You won't hear ANYBODY saying the ZT0200 is a weak knife

And the Fire was a $500 knife. It's my most expensive & only hand built knife that uses titanium, carbon fiber, lightning strike carbon fiber, Elmax, & a slick Double Action scale opening design. Can you blame me for liking it?

Liner locks are a joke. IMHO! As for $500 vs. $600 there's really no difference.
