trip to D.C.

Am planning a trip to DC,it looks like I'll be unable to take my gun with me at all,even to keep in the hotel room.Is this correct.Can I take it in a lock box in the trunk of the car.I have read and can't find any rules for carrying other than you can't anywhere or time.Is this true.Clue me in .thanks.

IIRC, a few years back a guy was moving from one state to another. While driving thru one of those north east states he was pulled over. Officer found two unloaded guns in the trunk. He was convicted and spent some time in jail before being released. He had no previous record.

Some one recently pointed out on this forum you will be arrested for having an empty shell casing in your car. That is how bad DC is.

If you're traveling through there, federal law applies and you can transport a firearm in a locked box in the trunk though you're likely to be hassled at minimum if stopped. If, however, you're staying there it's a no no. You must be licensed in DC to own and keep a firearm.

If you must go, my suggestion is to stay in a hotel in Northern Virginia. Then you're legal as long as you don't take it into DC (or Maryland) but have it for the trip, assuming you're driving. Ideally, stay in a NoVa hotel near a metro stop, and you won't have to worry about sanitizing your vehicle, or finding parking in the district .

Just remember most of the worthwhile sights are shut down right now because of The Obambam Tantrum.

a year or so ago I drove to D.C. but before getting there I stopped and dismantled my 9mm automatic, separated the slide, the magazine the springs etc. then put this into a locked box and put it under my spare tire in the trunk. Not that it would have been a good defense but it would show a REASONABLE person that this was not easily accessible and it would be found only upon a complete search of the car. Upon leaving D.C. it was restored to shooting condition and remained on by person.

MD and DC are both off limits if you want to reduce your risks. I would figure out public transportation to get back and forth that way. At least you can have your gun in VA.

Driving in D.C. is not fun period. My company sent me to school there and I stayed off K Street several times. Even in a rental car, it is the pits.

I decided to stay in NV near a metro stop and take the bus or trolley around DC,that way I don't have to do any driving either.That is after the goverment gets back to running again.Thanks guys.

Old Town, Alexandria, VA is a really nice place to stay to visit the capital. I'd recommend the Hotel Monaco on King Street. It was great. Pretty fancy, but it was an anniversary trip for me and the Mrs. The site of the Hotel Monaco has a historical marker as "the first martyr to the cause of southern independence". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshall_H ... _Virginia)

A lof of neat history in the area. It is a couple of blocks to the rail line that takes you to DC. we did so much walking that our feet were killing us at the end of each day. Take comfortable shoes. We went during cherry blossom season. It was a great trip. The opulence of the capital, library of congress, etc was amazing and over the top.

Yeah, just stay across the potomac in Arlington, Virginia. Take the subway into DC or drive. However, be aware that if you're driving in Arlington, if you take a wrong turn somewhere, you could accidentally enter DC armed. In some parts of DC, near certain government buildings, they have high tech scanners that can see in and through your car. An elderly couple got arrested because they had a gun in their RV. They made a wrong turn while driving.

Also, if you're keeping a gun in your Arlington hotel room, be carful of in room safes. Theiving hotel staff sometimes fix the safes so that it makes a nice latching sound when you shut it, but it actually doesn't lock. I pulled on the handle after I supposedly locked the safe, but it opened with ease. I left a note in the safe that said, "Nice try, donky donut holes," instead of my gun. I left my gun inside a ziplock bag underneath a pound of ice cream in the freezer.

When I came back, the note was gone from the in room safe, but the Glock flavored Blue Bell was still there....
